Woman Is Britain's Oldest Mom-to-Be

Elizabeth Adeney of Suffolk, England, is scheduled to have her first child next week by cesarean section. The pregnancy has stirred up controversy across the Atlantic because the birth will make Adeney, 66, Britain's oldest new mother.
London's Daily Mail reported that Adeney tried to have a child through fertility treatments five years ago, but was left "emotionally exhausted" by the failure, according to a friend.
But Adeney decided to persist after talking with medical professionals, the friend said.
Some people have criticized Adeney for deciding to have a child so late in life. Italian fertility specialist Severino Antinori, who helps women between ages 49 and 63 conceive, told the Daily Mail he would not have treated Adeney.
"I do not treat women older than 63," he said. "I don't want the child to be left without a mother before they reach 20."
Adeney, a childless divorcee, underwent fertility treatments in Ukraine. She works as a managing director at a plastics and textiles company. What does she have to say about the controversy?
"I don't have to defend what I've done. It's between me, my baby and no one else," Adeney told Britain's Telegraph.

i know some people may not agree---but IMHO i think its extraordinarily selfish to have a child at that age.

she will be 79 when the child reaches their 13th birthday. during the years when the child will be rebelling and need a parent the most--she will be between the ages of 80-84...and there is no guarantee she will even make it that long.

its just unfair because there is a good chance that child will grow up without ANY parent and will need someone to take care of them. (there is no mention of a father so i assume this must be thru some sperm donor).

yes a parent can die at any time, but when you are doing it so late in life, you are increasing those odds.

There are many younger people who choose to be parents who have special circumstances or knowledge that their life is likely to be shorter than most. I won't judge in this situation because I wouldn't judge a younger person with health circumstances that made a long lifespan virtually impossible. Being a parent is priceless and special, and there are factors other than likelylongevity that would have to be present for me to call her selfish.

I have a family friend who has had a baby in her sixties, and I say more power to her. Its not ideal for me, or maybe for you, but its her life, her business and so long as everyone is happy in that family...good for them. None of my business, and to be honest, none of anyones business but theirs.
