BFing coming to an end

DS is almost 6 months and BFing is coming to an end. I am very sad even though I know it is best. My goal was to bf for 6 months and I'm happy I'm still doing it but can't help feeling down on myself that I had to introduce formula earlier than expected because he wasn't getting enough and was miserable all the time.

We have been weaning over the last few weeks but in the last couple of days I think he's decided on his own that he is done. I'm so sad. We are down to 2 nursing sessions a day and he is fussy and squirmy at the breast each time but then will happily gobble down his bottles. He likes to hold his bottle on his own..I think he's exploring his independence.

If you were me would you at this point stop him cold turkey on the breast or continue the weaning plan even though he is fussy and seemingly disinterested?

I am so sorry you are going through this.
Since you asked for opinions, here you go! With DS1, I went back to work at 4 months. I HATED to pump so his nanny gave him formula during the day and I nursed him in the mornings and at night (last feeding). I continued this until he was 9 months when he self weaned (he bit me a drew blood. I stopped after that!).
If I were in your shoes, I would try to keep maybe the last feeding of the day and see how that goes. If he really has no interest, don't force it. It won't be enjoyable for either of you.

For me, weaning was the hardest decision so I completely get where you are coming from.

Great job mamma for keeping it up so long!! I remembr you had a hard time int he beginning with your son. BE PROUD of how far you have come and remember independence is a sign that a baby feels safe and secure to explore his world on his own which is a direct reflection on what a good job you have done!!

It doesn't matter when you you stop it's sad. I stopped when ds self weaned at about 14months and I was sad. You did a great job mommy. You gave your child a wonderful gift. If he has no interes you can just stop offering. You may have to pump to relieve engorgement. We were on one feeding a day when ds quit and I had no problems. I just stopped and my milk dried up with little discomfort. Good luck and be proud of your accomplishment
