Those with Aflac policies

Since my OB has indicated that it is very likely that he will be putting me on bed rest in the next 6-8 weeks (I am almost 14 weeks now), i am trying to get my ducks in a row. In November I took out an Aflac policy at work and now that I am reading it over I am kind of concerned. The Aflac rep SPECIFICALLY said that bed rest due to pregnancy complications were covered. If that is true can someone decipher this statement in my policy?

COMPLICATIONS OF PREGNANCY: (1) conditions requiring hospital stays (when the pregnancy is not terminated) whose diagnoses are distinct from pregnancy but are adversely affected by pregnancy or are caused by preganncy, such as acute nephritis, nephrosis, cardiac decompensation, missed abortion and similar medical and surgical conditions of comparable severity, and shall not include false labor, occasional spotting, Physician-prescribed rest during the period of pregnancy morning sikness, hyperemesis gravidarum, preeclaimpsia and similar conditions associated with the management of a difficult preganncy not constituiting a nosologically distinct compliaction of Pregnancy.

So after reading this policy, it would seem that I am NOT entitled to disability benefits under my Aflac plan. I only reason I took this policy was because of the pregnancy coverage. I would have just kept the money I was paying for it and put it in the bank. I am so annoyed. How the heck am I supposed to pay our bills for the next 6+months if I'm only getting $140 from disability?Chat Icon

I really hope I am misreading this. Anyone have any insight before I freak the eff out and start screaming?

Well, first of all, you have to have the Aflac policy for 10 months before you get pregnant for you to be covered at all

I had HG and they didn't pay out our policy until after DS was born.

Regardless of what is stated there- your bedrest won't be covered. Like Kate said, you have to have the plan for 10 months before you get anything covered. Your time after birth should be though.

I've heard alot of complaints about that ALFAC policy with regards to agents passing along incorrect information.

I found this online....to me this would suggest that it WOULD be covered Chat Icon

If you take a maternity leave due to complications of the pregnancy within the first 10 months you own the policy here’s how it works. The day you take leave is the first day of your elimination period. AFTER your elimination period is exhausted AND BEFORE the baby is born is the first day you may claim. Your claim ends the day the baby arrives because you haven’t owned the policy 10 months.

If you have owned the policy for 10 months or more at the time of a claim; your claim begins the day after the elimination period is exhausted and ends on the day you are released from the doctor’s care to return to work or the benefit period you purchased is exhausted, even if you take more time off to be with the baby.

Short Term Disability Accidents occurring after the effective date are payable immediately.

Re: Those with Aflac policies

From your last post it looks like you wouldn't be able to collect benefits until September at the earliest and they would end as soon as you have the baby.
I would call them and find out exactly what the deal is.
