do you really need a box spring?
I'm interested in purchasing a bed, but I don't have a lot of money to spend. Ikea is looking like a good option for me, but it seems as if all of their beds are platform beds and I don't think you can use a box spring with them. I've never slept on a bed without a box spring - does anyone have any insight as to how important they are? Thanks!

Re: do you really need a box spring?
It depends on the bed frame you get. Most platform beds don't require them so they are not necessary as the platform of the bed frame makes up for the box spring.

Re: do you really need a box spring?
I have an Ikea bed, with the wooden slats. Almost 5 years now, it went from being my bed to the bed DH and I sleep on.
Its very comfortable and there is no difference as far as I can tell without the box spring except that it is lower to the ground
The wooden slats take the place of the box spring, which really is what a box spring is, a big wooden box

ITA. For most beds, a plain mattress can't support itself on a typical frame, and it's very low to the ground. The box frame gives structural support to the mattress, and raises the mattress up. If you have a platform bed, that's all covered in the design of the platform frame.

In my own experience, a bed with slats can seriously shorten the life span of a good mattress. I like bedsteads, but prefer a bed with a box spring. Its more comfortable, has a bit more give, and your mattress will last longer.

Mary, If you can hold off until Memorial day, Sleepy's has really amazing sales on bed and box spring sets. I would recommend going there where you'll get something that lasts way longer thank what you might get from IKEA.
Congrats on the new place too!!!!
