If you put your DC in daycare early on...

How'd it go? I am trying to decide what to do about baby #2.

I already know I'm not having ryan in daycare while I'm on leave b/c we already pay a lot per month and he's only gone 2x this year due to the help of my in-laws. I took him in today for the first time in over a month so I could speak to them about holding a spot for both kids in February.

But, Ryan started daycare at 6-months b/c my mom was off from work for the summer and the timing worked . This baby will have to start earlier if I'm going back to work - at 12wks.

Part of me says it's not a big deal and at 12wks they're probably fine at daycare b/c all they do is sleep and eat, but then I feel guilty starting him/her so early - especially in the month of February. I consider a nanny but honestly, I prefer daycare and I'm not sure that's fair to Ryan since he'll really now be getting a lot out of the socialization and fun of daycare.

Can you share your experiences? Thoughts? TIA

we started at 12 weeks. It went well for us...they don't really know better at that age. It was harder for me than him.

I put DD in daycare at 4 months. It was harder on me than it was on her! She is thriving. I think half the battle is finding a daycare you are comfortable with. I too prefer daycare over the nanny option and so far it has worked out great.

Feel free to FM with any questions and if you just need additional support.

Re: If you put your DC in daycare early on...

We put my DS in daycare at 12 weeks and felt horrible that I was using daycare for him when he was so young. But to be honest, at that age, they just sleep and eat. My sister, who is a SAHM, made me feel better when she said "they just need a warm body to feed them and change them". I find it harder to leave him at daycare now (15 months) b/c now he is older and realizes I am leaving.

Same here. It was harder on me than DD (she started at 4 months). At that age, they really don't know better - and they still don't really "do" much..just sleep, eat, poop, etc. So, I just looked at it as someone else taking care of DD during the day. Once DD starting "knowing" better - she really started to like daycare! She gets excited when we get there in the am. The earlier months are much harder on the parents, IMO.

DS started at 3.5 months. I think it took him a few days to adjust and get used to the new environment. The teachers held him a lot the first few days so he could get familiar with them. They said now he's doing better than some of the babies who have been there for a while. If you're happy with the daycare and the teachers, you'll be fine. In some ways, it's better when they start young b/c they get used to it before they're in the separation anxiety phase.

Re: If you put your DC in daycare early on...

Thank you for posting this! I am scheduled to go back to work on 6/1, when DS will be 12 weeks.

He is supposed to go to daycare 2 days / week and my Mom will watch him 2 days / week. I am a mess about sending him (he is a very fussy baby) and am actually considering selling our home so I can be a SAHM! Chat Icon My Mom isn't that thrilled about watching him, because he is so difficult. I am just praying he grows out of this phase soon.

Right now you pay for daycare even though your DS is watched by your inlaws?

I am also looking into having a Nanny come to our home for those two days that my Mom won't be watching him... I'm just not sure which would be the better option for him.

I started at 8 weeks. I kinda feel that by the time he really understood, he was comfortable with them.

We put her in at 3 months. No problems at all - I was very happy with the daycare. I think since you have experience with this one, you and she (or he) will do fine....

Lucas started at 3 months and for as hard as it was to leave him so small it all worked out. He's still in daycare (just not that one Chat Icon ) and doing well. I give daycare a lot of the credit for helping us get into a routine and forcing it to stick.
