No, never. A degree does not equal someone's worth in my book. I tend to be surrounded by people with fancy degrees, but no fancy skills, so if a fancy degree doesn't equal greatness, then not having a degree certainly can't equal ungreatnessChat Icon

I don't think college will make anyone successful. I know plenty of people without degrees that are very successful in their careers. I have no respect for people that don't work hard or complain about working all the time but want the world or think they are owed it.

I definitely don't think less because I don't have a degree.
I don't have a degree and I do quite well and I am the breadwinner in our household. I also have no school loans.

Re: When you hear that someone doesn't have a degree [Poll]

Considering I made easily 3 times more money in my job before I got my degree (which I now consider completely useless) no, I would not judge anyone for not getting a degree.

College is not the right path for everyone. I have more judgment towards myself at the moment. I worked my arse off to get a degree and now I feel completely strangled by it. I am not thrilled with my field and took a left turn somewhere when I should have gone right......but I digress.

That being said the experience of college was very important to me. I just wish I had put more real thought into the long-term possibilities for the degree I chose. It was not a great choice for me and if given the chance would go back and chose something else.

Re: When you hear that someone doesn't have a degree [Poll]

I never finished my degree.

I occasinally get a weird reaction when people ask where I went to school or what dgree I hold and I have no response.

In my case I had a pretty bad homelife if I mentioned college to my Mother she said where am I going to get the money for that? Not that that is an excuse but it was not valued in my home and IMO was discouraged, by the time I was 18 I had been working to pay for all my clothes and spending money since I was 14 the lure of money at 18 - 19- 20 years of age from working more hours at my full time job was more important to me than paying for school and wasting my workable (hours) so I ended up quitting.

Now I have amassed many years of experience and I make much much more then my friends with masters degrees and I have no school loans to pay back, but I always run the risk of not even getting in the door for an interview if I should look to leave my current employer, because of my lack of a degree. I have made some attempts to go back but unfortunatly with the great paying career comes not much time for school, so maybe one day I can try again.
Sometimes my friends get annoyed with my situation and bring up that I don't have a degree and that is embarrassing - so it has its bad points and good points.

I don't have a college degree. Sometimes i get a negative reaction from people but it doesn't bother me. I have compelted 3 semesters of college but I just didn't have the desire to finish. One day i will finish what i started. But i have a good job, i'm smart, i don't think i need a degree right now. It's just not part of my priorities right now.

Re: When you hear that someone doesn't have a degree [Poll]

not at all! i know SO many people w/out degrees that make plenty of mula, and are just as intelligent. It's a matter of how hard u work...someone without a degree will just have to work that much harder through the workforce to succeed..and can be really proud for doing so.. i never ever judge. I get really annoyed when people do..there are plenty of people w/out degrees that are just as intelligent as those with..and vise-versa. tell the guy in ur office to shove it Chat Icon Sure he can be proud of himself..but boasting is just annoying..his degree doesn't make him any more intelligent than everyone else.

No. And for people to do so is rude and narrowminded, IMO.

Re: When you hear that someone doesn't have a degree [Poll]

No- I do not judge.

I have a Masters degree but my DH does not. He knew college was not for him so he graduated High School and went into the Marines. I am very proud of him for what he did and learned there. As he is proud of me for what I do and learn from going to school. I never think any less of a person with a degree or without.

However, I do have curiosity that eats at me sometimes when I hear a person did not go to college. I want to know why, which is none of my business. But since I come from a family that values higher education a great amount I have a high standard for it. Do I feel it makes me smarter or more intelligent or that Iwill make more money NO. I am going to be a teacher and in 80,000$ in loans from undergrad and graduate school. So I mean I am probably less well off then some people I know who do not havea college degree no loans and getting jobs or starting their own businesses in great careers. However I would never give up my degree. I also do not think a degree defines you, but I will say I enjoy what I have learned from going to school, I think it has helped build who I am today. I value it and also enjoy learning new things in new areas of life. But again, school is not for everyone. I would not judge anyone's reasoning either on why they did not get a degree or go to a technical school etc. Who am I to judge? That actually makes me less intelligent in my opinion if I have to put down another person because they do not have what I have.

Re: When you hear that someone doesn't have a degree [Poll]

I sometimes wonder why they chose not to pursue a degree. But that has nothing to do with judging them for it.

On the other hand, I have a Masters Degree and $45,000 worth of student loans to show for it, along with a poorly paying teaching position...so really, who's laughing? Chat Icon

Re: When you hear that someone doesn't have a degree [Poll]

Lots of people have created their successful business and were high school drop outs.

I think a degree will open doors easier but if you don't the confidence and can "sell" yourself it won't get you too far in life.

People with will and ambition will go much farther than someone with a degree.

As far as the guy in your office constantly flagging his degree as a sign of intelligence. Well, there are people who are smart (born INTELLINGENT!!) and people who have knowledge. Those are very different in my opinion. Everybody has knowledge in a particular topic. Whether it's learning a foreign language or how to knit. Being smart! Well, everybody is not born smart. Even those with a degree. He is a prime example of waving his degree for his lack of confidence or his inaptude in something. Confident people don't need to show others that they are smart. It's just obvious!

While I know that its better to have one in this day and age, I don't think having a degree necessarily makes one smarter or more driven than non-degree people.

ITA with this. I put other because I don't think less of anyone who does not have one but sometimes I do find myself wondering why they don't if that makes sense.

I have two degrees, my DH has none and he is a lot smarter then I am. I think that some people just did not know what they wanted to do with their life so they did not get a degree. Then life happened and it made it harder. I went to school full time at night and worked full time during the day for a long time. I put off a lot in my life. But that was personal decision based on something I valued other peple may not have the same values.

I think most people I know without degrees make more money then I do. Having an education is great. I cherish it but it does not make you smarter or better the next person.
