Nail Repair / strengthening - after acylic is Off
Ladies, what do you use to strengthen your nails. After having Acrylic nails on for so long, my nails are soft and breaking.
Any products that you recommend?

Re: Nail Repair / strengthening - after acylic is Off
After having acrylic on for YEARS what I did was - I went for regular manicures, always kept on clear polish and kept my nails SHORT.
After my nails stopped looking HORRIBLE, I stopped getting them painted. I just file them almost every day, buff and shine them - most people think I have polish on! My nails are GREAT, they get SO LONG and are very strong ( this took months though ).
It sounds counter intuitive to NOT polish your nails but my regular doctor told me that your nails need to BREATHE. I also keep my toenails bare for the entire winter, it stinks BUT my toenails used to peel and yellow - now they are in great shape!

Wow, Tilde- I never thought of not putting something on them! LOL I didn't even consider that. I also do not polish my toes in the winter at all. Makes sense to do the same for the hands for a while. Thanks for the tips.

i swear by nail magic. i agree with tilde about letting your nails breathe but until they are stronger i would keep them very short and use nail magic. you can get it at ulta. apply it every day, one coat on top of another, and take it off and reapply every few days (it chips after about 4 days).
i used to get acrylics and this is what i used when i stopped getting them.
you have to be diligent about using it but it is so much cheaper than nailtiques and nailtek, and i think it works better.

Nailtiques...i think you would start with formula 2 for repair (and they might make one for after acrylics too). put it on every day, one coat over the next, remove after a few days and repeat.
then when your nails are better, move to formula 1 for maintenance.
stuff works great!!

I use Rejovacote. This stuff works wonders! I always had acrylics and took a break for about a year. My nails are SO strong. I bought mine from my nail salon. Let me know if you want a bottle ($7) and I'll pick one up for you.

Re: Nail Repair / strengthening - after acylic is Off
I COMPLETELY agree about the Nailtiques (but NOT Nailtek - this one did nothing for me at all).
I used Nailtiques after having worn acrylic over my nails for a long time and for the first time EVER, my nails eventually began to grow and not break! Before that, my nails would just constantly break on the sides etc and that's why I originally started using acrylics.
Anywho, now I don't use anything except regular polish, but I used Nailtiques for a while after I stopped getting acrylics and it worked great!

Re: Nail Repair / strengthening - after acylic is Off
i swear by OPI nail envy. i have been using it for so many years now - my nails stay strong and healthy.
what you need to do - if your nails are horibbly damaged is continue to let them grow and keep them short until the entire nail is finally healthy and no longer damaged.
it takes some patience but it will work and you will have gorgeous natural nails before you know it.
i also recommend nutra nail tea tree oil. it helps repair damaged nails.

After having acrylic on for YEARS what I did was - I went for regular manicures, always kept on clear polish and kept my nails SHORT.
This is what I did. I had to keep cutting them otherwise they would split and crack and it would kill. It took about 6 months for my nails to grow out completely but that's what had to happen.
Now knowing what has to happen I don't think I can ever go back to tips although I love the look of them.

kim, my nail salon does something called a glue manicure for after you take off your nails (gel, acrylic whatever). Its basically one coat of glue just to strengthen your nails as they grow out. It isnt thick so you cant tell it is on there as they grow out!

Nailtek They have different formulas- depending on how bad your nails are damaged. You use it as a base and a top coat. works great!

Nailtiques #2 is awesome!! My nails are SO weak, they peel a lot - I started using the nailtiques about two months before my wedding and they were long and hard.
I still use the #2 every day b/c my nails are so weak - they now last through typing, softball, and volleyball. Great stuff...

Re: Nail Repair / strengthening - after acylic is Off
I honestly used every nail strengthner out there when I took mine off......nothing worked. I was wasting money. The last thing I bought was some Sally Hansen stuff (its in a green bottle) and believe it or not that was my saving grace!!!!!!

I did/do the exact same thing!!!!! It took a semester of school to get my nails healthy, to the point that they wouldn't break. AFter the summer, they were so strong that I had a hard time CUTTING them with nail clippers!

Re: Nail Repair / strengthening - after acylic is Off
Thanks for all the information ladies.
I decide to keep cutting them back short, because they were cracking and peeling so easy. I am hopping to get a little more stregnth to them so that I can wear them at a legnth like:
I purchased "Nailtiques Formula 2 Plus" and have been doing 3 days of coating, one coat a day. Then remove over night then and starting 3 days again.
I didn't think of a multivitamin! I am going to add that into my diet. I haven't taken them in a LONG time. So that should help too.
Thanks again!
