Day CareQ - Where should a 14 month old nap?

I am looking to start Athan at day care in 2 months. He will be 14 and 1/2 months at that time. Some of the center that I called said they have them in cots. Athan is a mad man when he sleeps - he literally flings himself all over the place and goes crashing into the crib rails every 2 minutes. Will he be OK on a cot off the floor? Where does your center put the 14 months old to nap? THANK YOU!!! Chat Icon

Elizabeth is in a crib, but she's been at this day care since she was 7 months old so they KNOW she's not ready for a cot.

Re: Day CareQ - Where should a 14 month old nap?

This was a HUGE issue for me when my DS started a new day care when he was 15 months... Needless to say I let them "try it", and he does great. He is a major crazy man when he sleeps too...ALL over the place, but he does really well. He is on a cushy mat on the floor with a nap mat spread(that I provide) over it.

I think they see all the other kids sleep this way, so they just go along with it.

At our daycare, the small kids sleep on mats on the floor

Re: Day CareQ - Where should a 14 month old nap?

my 16 month old started in a cot at daycare at about 12 months. I was skeptical too, since he ends up in the weirdest positions, but apparently, he had/has no problems with it. On the 2 occasions I had to pick him up early, he was napping away and looked comfy.

DS started daycare when he was 12 months and he started on a cot. I was nervous, but they get it to work there. He even stays on the cot if he wakes up and everyone is still sleeping! Chat Icon It really was not an issue for us.

Oh, and he is 18 months now.

Thanks ladies! I just now what an AWFUL sleeper he is and I worry about him falling off the cot if we go with this one center. Another one has "sleep mats" which sounds better to me and another one will have him in a crib since they have "infants" to age of 16 months.

At 12 months DS started sleeping in a cot...worked out excellent. The teachers were very helpful to get him used to it - they would sit with him and rub his back to help him get to sleep.

sorry for crashing, but i wanted to add that the day cares that i've worked at the cots are only a couple of inches off the ground.

Re: Day CareQ - Where should a 14 month old nap?

DD recently moved into the toddler room (when she was 15.5 months) and started taking naps on a cot. When I first found out, I was like, there is NO WAY is she going to stay in the cot. But she totally surprised me and apparently has no issues with it and stays in it!! She actually sleeps better in the toddler room since there is a set nap time than she did in the infant room.

Good Luck!

Re: Day CareQ - Where should a 14 month old nap?

I'll add my experience, I am usually home with DS but he does go to back up daycare sometimes, when he went recently he was moved to the toddler room (he is 14.5months) and napped on a mat. I was SO surprised, I didn't think there was any way he would, especially on the first day, but he did. He is also the type who is all over his crib & what not. GL Chat Icon

You will...defintely a question ask...how they help the kids that are transition to the cot...how they deal with children that don't want to sleep on the cot..etc.

I had the same reaction when they told me my DS was going on a cot at 15.5 months but he did great as well. My DS actually sleeps better too on a set schedule as opposed to when he was in the infant room.

Re: Day CareQ - Where should a 14 month old nap?

They are actually switching DD to a cot this week at daycare. She is 14 months. I am kinda iffy about it but they seem to think she will be fine. I'll let you know how it goes! Chat Icon
