What is a receiving blanket anyway?
Is it justa regular blanket and if so, why is it called RECEIVING BLANKET?

They are thinner than regular blankets and good for swaddling.

I always thought it was called it because newborns are wrapped in them when the hospital hands them to you. As in: You are receiving your baby.
