For those that have at home care or nannies-need your help

So, i have an inground pool and 4 month old DD..
I dont think i want the nanny putting DD in the pool at all while i am not home..
She asked if she could use the pool?

In addition, just another quick question..
Do your nannies drive your babies around in their car to the mall etc...she told me once the weather is warm she wants to take her out places and asked me for a car seat base...

I am not sure i am comfy with either...am i being a paranoid mom?

My nanny did not drive but she used to walk DS around in his carriage. I asked her not to take him around the train and certain areas. She put DS in his kiddie pool only a handful of times. She was extremely cautious and rather keep him out of the sun and dry in the house.

Did she ask if she could take your DD in the pool or did she mean can she go swimming while your DD is napping or something? I wouldnt feel comfortable with either or her driving around with DS. Perhaps I am paranoid too Chat Icon

Personally, I would not want anyone except my DH and I driving Emerson around. I would be so nervous if anyone else was driving her. The thing is, the nanny is there to take care of your daughter and not run all over town doing her errands. If she is close enough to walk to places with her in a stroller I would be okay with that but I wouldn't let her drive my DD.

I also agree with you about the pool, I wouldn't want my DD in the pool just in case. Better safe than sorry.

Pool without a doubt no IMO.

Local driving would be okay with me after I drove with her a few times, and only local and she calls to let me know when she is leaving and when she returns home.

My friend lets her nanny drive her DS but only local and for a few months she didnt until she gained a stronger trust in the nanny.

ETA: But you have to do what YOU are comfortable with. If you dont want the nanny doing either than tell her that, after all you are paying her for her services.

Pool, yes for my older one but my nanny is a certified life guard and CPR certified.

As for driving around, I do but only because she has to. There isn't any place that they can walk to and my older child goes to preschool and they take classes. It's not what I really want but I have come to terms with it.

I am a babysitter, full time.

Last summer, I almost approached the mother to see if swimming was okay, but decided not to. Once I saw him swimming, there is no way I would have taken him, he is a water maniac.

Driving, I took the job with his mother knowing that we will be driving all over the city.

I am sure she gets nervous and has to remind herself to breathe, but the benefits completely make it worth it.

Classes, playdates, different parks, museums...yes, on rainy days, we do go to the mall. Its nice to walk around, put a few quarters into the rides there, eat at food court, go run around bookstore.
We actually saw santa like 7 times in Dec!Chat Icon

I take him to bounce houses.

We do walk to local parks. But I hate repeating parks in the same week.

I told her I could provide my driving record...only thing on there in last 10 years is a 15.00 parking ticket.

My viewpoint is you either trust the person who is caring for your child, or you don't. That includes driving. An inground pool is different ONLY because as an adult I would not go swimming alone, and therefore I wouldn't take my own child unless I knew there was a lifeguard (or another adult) present. I live in a complex with a pool, and will only take DD with DH (or friends) since we don't have a lifeguard.

I am a live in nanny and I do not take the kids in the car unless it i a well prepared trip. My employer knows weeks in advance and I rarely take the little girl I watch out of the house. I am CPR and Lifeguard certified so I am able to take her in the pool but try to keep her in the baby pool as much as possible instead. Good luck. I would make her take a bunch of safety classes before allowing her to do either but she should have a carseat in case of emergencies.

I'd have to agree. If you trust them enough to be alone with your child and care for them then putting the child in the car should be ok. As for the pool thing, Me and DH are both certified lifeguards and CPR certified. I would not want my child in a pool without a certified lifeguard. So if the nanny was certified then I would have no problem with the pool.

Not sure about the pool situation, but....
I was nanny in Manhattan for a long time for 2 separate families and I used to take the kids around the city all the time , (I didn't drive, just walk or take a cab or the train) beside doing "their things" I would go shopping and run errands for myself. non of the moms I ever worked for had a problem with me doing so(I had a permission). Reason being that I worked for both families for a long time and they had no reason not to trust me.

First mom told me after few months of working for them that she had no problem with me taking the baby "out" even if it was for my own "errands".

The other mom, I had to ask one time if I could take her DS to the store with me to buy something and she said any time I wanted to do so would be just fine, she told me I could even go out and have lunch with friends and take her DC with me(which I would never do anyway and never did)
It depends on a situation and how much you trust the person, if you KWIM

Thanks everyone! I appreciate it..i think the pool is completely off limits..

As far as the car goes, i am going to only allow it for book readings, or parks..i am not ok in a mall etc...i have to be honest with her...

I will blame it on DH, lol!
