Traveling to mexico

DH and I are scheduled to go to Cancun for Easter, also our anniversary. I have been hearing awful things and people claiming there is a government warning to not travel there. My TA said it's only for the border states. Is anyone going or has gone recently? I'm a little nervous, but part of me is oblivious and naive.

Re: Traveling to mexico

It is definitely more of a border issue. I would go and enjoy, but be aware of your suroundings and take proper precautions. I would give this advice to anyone traveling to Mexico, only carry enough cash to get you through the day/night. Keep the rest locked in a room safe.

Re: Traveling to mexico

i was just about to post the same question! i was shocked at how much the prices dropped going to mexico. I was talking to my sister and told her i was going to book a long weekend getaway with dh but she was telling theres something about a drug war. I googled it and came across drug cartels in cancun. It said state lines but also cancun is pretty heavily armed right now.
She was telling me she came across an article that Expedia is refunding all travelers going to cancun if they want.

I think ill pass it this time even though i love Cancun

Oh, I totally agree...We went to Riviera Maya for our HM last year and didn't have a problem. Only left the hotel to swim with the dolphins and shopping in Playa de Carmen. I'm just worried this time around about transportation to and from the airport. I'm definitely going to do more research.

Can you arrange the transportation through your resort? Even if it costs a little more, it may be your best bet.
I may be naive too, but I'm not too big of a worrier about stuff like this. I feel like people look at NY like it's a scary, dangerous place, so I guess I'm not too intimidated when it comes to traveling. I've actually been looking to book a trip to Riviera Maya for October for our 5 year anniversary. I'll try to take advantage of the deals ad just be a cautious traveler.

Re: Traveling to mexico

My DH and I are going to Mexico this summer for 6 weeks. I looked into this issue a lot and it is the border states that are mostly having a problem. I just plan to not bring any jewerly, wear anything too flashy, etc.

DH and I are leaving on Saturday for Playa del Carmen. I have been stalking the Tripadvisor forums and everyone says that it is fine. The violence is happening at the border which is hundreds of miles away. Use common sense and precaution and enjoy your trip!!

I think they are talking about what is going on in Juarez (by El Paso) and less so by TiJuana and Nogales, but I wouldn't worry too much.

We own a beach house in a border state in Mexico and I have no worries ever. Actually we find the Mexicans there 1000x nicer than the Americans. My BIL and niece are there right now and we'll be going next month (driving over the border).

but, with anywhere you go, you always have to be careful about pickpockets/theives etc. but that's advice for any trip

I wouldn't go, period. I've seen too many awful stories about it on CNN, re kidnappings, etc. Call me naive, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Cancun Police has always been shady and known for robberies and rapes...in these times, you don't know who is who and I wouldn't risk it. There are many other beautiful and safe places to visit.

your travel agent is correct, I have read few articles in Travel Weekly (for travel agents) and the warning is def. for border states...

Just got back from Cabo last night and everything was fine. Go and enjoy!! Just don't go off the beaten path on your own (and I wouldn't reccommend doing that regardless of the state of things!)

Re: Traveling to mexico

The kidnappings and murders are related to the drug cartel. If you are going down to deal drugs, than yes, I would warn against it, if not, you will most likely be as safe as years before.

and again...this is all happening in Juarez (El Paso) and Tijuana (San Diego). DH had no problem having his mom cross the border for business last week and he's pretty protective of her.

Plus Obama is giving aid to Mexico to fight the drug cartels and sending more border patrol to certain areas.
