spin off- Freedom of Choice Act.
I find it interesting that this bill still gets so much press... The bill has been floating around since 2004, totally in defense of the possibility that Bush's partial-birth abortion ban would basically make it impossible for women to get abortions. The thinking among the authors was that it would codify Roe V Wade.
The bill was later introduced during the 110th congress and referred to committee- where no further action was taken. Currently, the bill has NOT been reintroduced.. and therefore, NO WHERE NEART to becoming a law.
Why are people bringing this up now, under Obama? Because he was a co-sponsor of the bill in 07. During that time he gave a speech on reproductive rights and said the first thing he would do is sign the freedom of choice act.
However, now that the danger of Roe V Wade being overturned is passed and we have a Democratic majority- the bill isn't going to be reintroduced.
The whole thing is just somehow on Catholic's agenda b/c of what Obama said- but what they are saying in Church Bulletins, about the bill being up for a vote, is completely a lie.
and the funny thing is? I'm Catholic!
Just though everyone should know and spread the word.

Re: spin off- Freedom of Choice Act.
Even if it were the case that no FOCA provision would come into existence until the whole bill went through the legislative process, ignoring FOCA until it’s actually introduced is too late. The risk to pro-life laws is apparent, so it makes sense to initiate a campaign now. It’s especially important to contact Congress early and often because controversial legislation can move fast. I mean, just recently, Congress voted on a thousand-page, nearly trillion-dollar economic-stimulus package without committee consideration. So if sponsors draw up a bill that can get majority support, FOCA could move from a back room to final approval in days or weeks.
For the campaign you are talking about in your church bulletin, it takes months of preparation, planning, printing, and distribution of materials to get tens of millions of individually signed postcards into the hands of members of Congress. It doesn’t make sense to “wait” and it is not a "lie"

Re: spin off- Freedom of Choice Act.
if a church bulletin says
"FOCA is UP for vote" when it's not, it is, in the very least, misinformation.
better would be to say "although FOCA is not yet up for vote, we want to make sure Congress know this is not what we want" or whatever.
I hate fear mongering and misrepresentation, even IF it is done by my church.
NO ONE is paying any attention to the fact that religious institutions have PROTECTIONS under the law.
so it seems to me this is just another way to have people, perhaps other wise PRO choice people, to be against FOCA, b/c people are so oppossed to forcing a religious institution to perform acts that are contrary to their "moral" beliefs (which I agree with, as does the US Code, hence the protection.)

Re: spin off- Freedom of Choice Act.
It certainly does say- FOCA is up for a vote- and I think they even had a DATE!!!!
I think it's just ridiculous to put this type of fear into people knowing that the bill hasn't even been sponsored! Now that Bush is gone, I think the fear that Roe will be restricted is gone..
There was a whole article- I think in the Times about this bill and how right-wing groups are rallying around it, and yet it is nowhere NEAR getting passed like people are led to believe.

So why don't you just contact the Pastor and discuss it with him?

The reason why I'm posting it here is b/c of the entire discussion on the other thread re: Catholic hospitals... Many people are under the assumption that this bill is sponsored and up for a vote. It is not- and for certain advocacy groups to say so, I just wanted to put that information out there for others.

I agree. This may be what your parish bulletin states, but mine does not.
Our bulletin states: FEDERAL LEGISLATION (FOCA) Freedom of Choice Act MAY BE RECONSIDERED by the United States Congress. Contact: President Barack Obama, The White House, Washington, D.C. 20500, 202-456-1111 US Senator, Charles Schumer, 212-486-4430 US Senator, Kirsten Gillibrand, 212-688-6262 Ask them to work to defend the unborn child by opposing this bill. Fifty million innocent & helpless unborn babies have lost their lives to choice since Roe v Wade legalized abortion 36 years ago.
