How bad is a CT Scan while prego?
I was in a car accident today (guy blew a stop sign) they took me to hospital in ambulance & gave me a CAT scan b/c my neck was bothering me; but they made me sign a release & put 2 lead aprons on me. I'm just nervous; I'm 7 months prego.
Has anyone had one done?

Re: How bad is a CAT Scan while prego?
I was in hospital around 28 weeks and they thought i had appendicitis but needed to do a cat scan to be sure. Surgeon and OB assured me that baby was already developed and nothing would happen to baby. So im sure in your 7th month u are fine. I hope your feeling ok. Thats sooo scary!

Re: How bad is a CAT Scan while prego?
Did they wrap the apron around your entire body, not just lay on top of you?
The misconception people have about xray is they think if you lay the apron on top (even two) your safe.. but CT scans rays go all around you in a circle.. therefore you should be covered top and bottom and sides to protect the fetus. CT does give you the most exposure of all the xrays. Not trying to scare you b/c im sure the doctors felt the benefits outweighed the risk. Im an xray tech and I hate when techs try and get away with minimual shielding and do that laying on top cr@p knowing the beam goes around the patient. I had a CT of my chest 2 weeks for I got pregnant and my own coworker tried pulling that stuff on me.. thinking I wouldnt know b/c I didnt do CT..

Now I'm scared b/c no they didn't do that. They put 2 aprons on top of me. Scan was on my neck, I had the collar on. Had to sign the waiver.

27 weeks the baby is pretty much fully developed so I wouldnt be to scared, but the baby did get radiated, im not going to lie. The worse time for the baby to get radiation is the 1st trimester b/c of all the new cells being matured and developed. I wouldnt be to concerned but i would be mad b/c that tech should have had two shields on top and two shields on bottom.

I am so sorry you were in an accident!
I am sure the baby will be ok. It was such a brief exposure. If you are that concerned call you OB.
