Any moms of Biters out there??

SO I have a 15 month old. Any amount of frustration or having to do something he doesn't want to, he tries to bite meChat Icon

What is the deal? I do say no, many times will walk away from him, then he just SCREAMS.

I find that ignoring him, makes him just stop and move on...but is that really the best way to handle it?? How long does this phase last...Help!!

Re: Any moms of Biters out there??

I hate the biting!

Mine bit twice when he was 14 mos old. I bit him and he did not do it again.

Once in Oct at the mall...he was in a fight with a bigger kid.

Now once on Monday(fighting over toy) and another at the park today(thank god it was just the girl's thick coat)

The dr upped his steroids right after christmas, so I am thinking maybe that's why all of a sudden the biting is back.

Josh doesn't bite out of the blue, I know he is frustrated with other child then does it...but I would so much rather he just walked away...its over such trivial things!

I have a biter. He's been that way since he was about a year old. He goes in fazes and at daycare he does it when he's bored or needs a new activity. We have put him in time outs, tried biting back ..everything..but he will still do it every once in a while ANd now he knows..he says mom bite..not nice..i'm like yes Gavin not nice..its hard but the doc says he will grow out of it...he has gotton much better I would say but I do watch him extra close with other kids..just in case.

So far he doesnt do it to other kids...just authority figures....it's so frustrating, i just wish I knew the right way to work on it with him. Where the heck did he even learn to bite??

I'll ask my Ped next visit what I can do to help him learn it's not right.

Re: Any moms of Biters out there??

its so frustrating!

I don't know how to intervene. Mine is a rule stickler. He won't take a toy, but don't take his either.

Babysitting kid's mom shows up on monday...she's chatting with me. her kid wants attention, goes and grabs the ball josh is playing with and runs away. First josh yells that he has the ball. I tell kid give ball back...then josh says it again...I go to get ball...then josh grabs him and bites....so I know why he is doing it...but its a ball! we have a million of them. I hate to step in all the time.

Most are...some aren't. Lucas has been bitten and has bitten other children. It's their reaction to frustration and anger. So while it's hard to say that it's normal because pain is involved...it really is a part of development for many kids.

You're doing the right thing by showing your disapproval of the behavior. He'll learn so long as you are consistent that it's not nice.

Re: Any moms of Biters out there??

No, I had a horrible experience at the mall playground one morning.

Long story short, a mom comes in with a 4 year old and like 6 year old. We were already there 45 minutes.

I go to get their shoes to leave and I hear josh roaring like a lion...I look over and the kid is pushing him. I scream for josh to get away from him as I work my way over. Josh is still roaring the kid goes to push him again, as kid's hand goes up to push, josh grabs hand and bites.

It was a bite, not hard at all...but still I know its a bite.

This kid's mother went BALLISTIC!

If he's a biter why is he with other kids?

(he had not bitten in over 6 months)

Then Josh's asthma kicks in...so now he's coughing and gasping...the mother tells me he should not be here with a cough anyway...

I am getting inhaler now, she is still screaming...now for SECURITY! lol....I told her to ask for a nurse too because she's making my kid a wreck.

While this is going on, her other kid was in a fight with another little boy.

I think it is natural. DS did it for a couple of months. We said No Biting everytime he did it. It stopped. We knew he did it when he felt threatened or frustrated.

Re: Any moms of Biters out there??

DS has been biting for 6 months now. (He's 16 months now) He does it about a dozen times per day. I look like a $2 hooker with all the bite marks on me. I am utterly frustrated.

We have tried everything we've been told. Ignoring, Sternly saying 'No' (which he laughs at), time-outs, and even biting back. We try each thing for 2 straight weeks. When it doesn't work we try another for 2 weeks. We have cycled through everything so many times.

I am at my wits end over this. I am afraid to let him play with other kids. He has a large vocabulary and can communicate. A lot of times he does it on the changing table or when he's just snuggling in.

Re: Any moms of Biters out there??

I caught a lot of flack with some for what I did...

DD wasn't necessarily a biter, but she had a few instances...the first time I yelled, the next time I swatted her bottom (DH didn't like it, but honestly it was my reaction...not really intentional)...

The next time it happened, I ran to the fridge and got a lemon and stuck it in her mouth (not forcefully, but enough to make her bite down on it)...she cried pretty hard...she didn't like the sour taste...

She never bit me again...

One time when she was a little older (almost 3) she made an ATTEMPT to bite...I told her I was going to put hot sauce on her tongue...this made her CRAZY...she cried and cried and never even made the attempt ever again...

Ironically now she LOVES lemons...go figure

my ds has been biting for months. it started with me but know he will only bite my dad or dh. he does it when he is very excited (when dh and him are playing) or with my dad it just seems for attention (although he is always the focus of everyones attention.) he'll even put himself in time out after he bites my dad.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

he never bites out of frustration...that's when he hits.Chat Icon

i honestly don't know what works but after the no biting, not nice speech and a time out i always go and get him a teether and tell him to bite that.

Please let me know if you find a good method because I htink I am in for the long haul on this one.

hmm a lemon..not a bad idea if other behavioral modifiers don't work..I know this is what my own mother of SEVEN kids did, and we are all still alive and well.Chat Icon
