Is it weird or is it me? Parents and gift giving
A friend told me that she didn't get her son anything for Christmas (he's almost 2) b/c he wasn't expecting anything.
I just can't see NOT getting your child a gift for the holidays no matter the age.

Really? Does she mean that they bought him NOTHING or that Santa gave him all the toys (that's assuming they celebrate Christmas). Because technically, we didn't give Ava anything, Santa gave it all to her. KWIM?

No, nothing. I understand 'Santa' bringing everything but they didn't do Santa this year b/c he's young.

Re: Is it weird or is it me? Parents and gift giving
Did she buy anything for others in the family and didn't buy for the 2 year old? Maybe she figured she didn't need to buy anything cause other family members were gonna buy her kid things to she didn't have to cause the chlild wouldn't expect it from her, since they don't know the difference? (which is still wrong IMO)
i couldn't imagine just not buying something for my child just because. if she's having financial difficulties, that's one thing...but just because she didn't think the kid would "expect" it? i'm the kind that gets such joy from seeing someone open a gift...i guess she's not.

Re: Is it weird or is it me? Parents and gift giving
Although it seems weird, and I would never do it myself, I can understand what your friend is saying. Last Christmas, my son was 1 and a half, and he had no idea about Santa, gifts, or the whole concept of Christmas. I ended up opening all of his gifts Christmas morning.
So yes, I do think it's not right that your friend didn't get her child ANYTHING, but I don't think the child cares one way or the other at that age, KWIM?

Re: Is it weird or is it me? Parents and gift giving
Hmmm, that's really odd and I've never heard of that before. Does he have a bday coming up soon? Maybe they don't have the money? Maybe friends and family bought so much that they thought it'd be too much? I'm grasping at straws, but I feel like I want to buy Ava the world, even when she was 6 months old for her first Christmas.

Nope, no financial issues, his birthday is in 4 months and they didn't celebrate with their family this year b/c they live in another state. It just seems strange to me. I know he's young, but part of the joy of the holidays is seeing the kids excitement opening gifts.

Now--did she exchange gifts with her (i assume) DH, the baby's father? i would find it so weird that they buy for each other and then get nothing for the baby.

Re: Is it weird or is it me? Parents and gift giving
DH and i didn't buy anything for our DS. he is only 3 1/2 months old, and we knew he would be spoiled by everyone in our family. we didn't buy each other gifts either because we are trying to save $$.
if we had the $$ and the space, we would probably have gotten him a few things but we are very lucky, there is nothing that he needs.
ETA: i should clarify that while we could easily afford to buy DS gifts, we just chose not to. we aren't having fiancial issues, we just think our $$ is better spent on something like the downpayment to a house or something we would enjoy. he doesn't know any better so i don't see the problem.
however next year we will definitely buy him things. he will be old enough to enjoy the idea of presents, IMO, and that's really what its about.
but there is no way i would judge someone for not buying their DC gifts at any age - if they know that other family members are going to be spoiling their child, and they know that the child won't need any more toys or clothes, then what is the big deal?

Yeah, but that's different. When they're that young, I can see not getting anything. My sister just had a baby two months ago, and he literally needed nothing because she just had her shower in September. I know that at 2, my daughter absolutely understands what gifts are and last year at 18 months, she was ripping gifts open like crazy at Christmas. That being said, Christmas really isn't about the gifts and maybe they really, honestly didn't think it mattered, and maybe to them, it didn't. I guess

Yes, and that's the thing....they don't know a present from a hole in the wall at that age! They really don't give you the reaction you would expect, so unfortunately you don't really experience that "joy". We had a lot more fun and satisfaction with our son this year at age 2 1/2.

Yes, I think it's weird. MY DD is 15 months old and by no means "expected" any gifts on Christmas. However, we still bought and wrapped several gifts for her. As did the rest of my family.
I get that 2 is young, but really. Buy a few toys and wrap them up.

Re: Is it weird or is it me? Parents and gift giving
I think it's pretty weird. I can't imagine not having the desire to get at least one gift for your child. Do they buy him birthday presents? If it's a money thing, I think it's selfish to buy each other gifts and buy nothing for your child. Different strokes for different folks though I guess.

If he were a baby-baby I wouldn't think it was weird.
But - at 2 years old I would imagine he would like opening gifts. I personally could never do that - but I'm crazy when it comes to my son!

IDK, DD was exactly 3 weeks old last Christmas and we didn't get her a thing (not even a token gift so when she grows up we could tell her what she got).
This year we got her two gifts and then both families bought her tons of stuff.
Next year she will be two and I seriously think she will have a much better grasp on Santa, so we will be going a little overboard I'm sure. However, if she is just as clueless next year as she is this year, then we will probably stick to one or two gifts again.

That is so strange! Why would she do that? I feel sorry for the child. Has the child said anything?

I agree with this mentality, I have no children yet but went
CRAZY for my nephews first Christmas. It was a complete
joke and waste of money . But no gifts at all? Thats
rough.

I think it's kind of sad...
I'm not a parent but I know how I feel about buying my nieces and nephews presents for Christmas and I just couldn't imagine NOT buying at least one thing for my child for Christmas.

It could depend on the kid - both my kids were 18m at xmas time and they really didn't care about opening presents or really the presents themselves. we got them a few things, but not much (but they did get from other family) - I put money into their savings instead.

Re: Is it weird or is it me? Parents and gift giving
Well we got DD a gift for Hanukah last year, but not for all 8 nights. She was 1 1/2 last year. Now that I think about it, I don't think I gave DD a 2nd birthday present.
Honestly, I don't see the big deal. Maybe its because I don't celebrate Christmas. But I give DD toys and books all year round. I don't see why they are more special to give them to her on one day thank another.
