Re: what is a biophysical?
I had one last week.
It's sort of like the Level II. They are checking the measurments of the baby to make sure s/he is growing appropriately. They also monitor the baby's movements and make sure they are doing their "practice" breathing. Babies don't breath in the womb, but they do practice.
I believe they give a time frame for these things and they score the baby 2 points for each thing they are looking for. My Dr. told me last week, my scored 8 out of 8.
HTH.
FM me if you have any questions

Re: what is a biophysical?
I go weekly for these as well now.
When I go, they are much faster than growth/level II sonos. They check the baby's heartrate, watch for movement and breathing motions, and measure the fluid. They do not measure the baby's head, abdomen and femur each time I go in...only about every 3rd week. If the baby cooperates, I can be in and out in under 5 minutes.

Re: what is a biophysical?
My doc hasn't indicated I will have to do this, and I am 37 wks. Is this usually only reserved for high-risk pregnancies?

Based on my experiences, no. They do growth sonos that measure the baby's abdomen, head and femur that can estimate how much he weighs at that point. The biophysical is just looking for fluid level, certain movements and breathing motions.
Why do you think you are measuring behind? Did you have a growth sono recently?

Although I dont think I've technically been considered "high risk", I think these profiles are done when the docs see something that they want to keep an eye on. For me, I have the velamentous (now only marginal) cord insertion and the calcifications in the placenta. So they want to keep checking in to make sure the baby is A-OK. If your doc hasn't suggested you get it done, I'm sure it's because everything with your LO is perfect and they dont see a need for it.

My Dr. sent me for a biophysical last week along with 2 non stress tests during the week because I had mentioned to her I wasn't feeling any fetal movement at 30 weeks, so she was concerned.

Re: what is a biophysical?
I have had many at this point. Its because I have had complications and I have a multiple pregnancy. Most of the time they do the weights, but they didn't this past time.
