I have a little dilemna

When I delivered DD 3 years ago, I had an emergency c-section. I had an absolutely PHENOMENAL ob/gyn I had been with for over 10 years. My recovery was a dream, and all the nurses who came in to check on my incision always immediately asked if my doctor did the surgery, because apparently he is notorious for doing a good job with c-section incisions.

Well, fast forward a few years and he no longer works at the hospital where I delivered. In fact, now he delivers at a hospital about 30 mins away from home and away from work, in a very unsettling neighbhorhood in North Philly. I know this because I visited someone in the maternity ward at this hospital a few years ago (don't ask).

Now, there is a BEAUTIFUL hospital about 5 minutes away from me, in suburban heaven. It has a very reknown labor and delivery unit, full-time perinatologist on staff, and private birthing suites. If I choose to deliver there, however, I would need to find a new ob/gyn.

So, I will be released from my RE in a few weeks and have a decision to make. Either stay with my ob/gyn or get a referral from my RE for an ob/gyn that delivers at the hospital close to my house. She has assured me she has a few good recommendations.

I should add, DH is convinced that if I go to any other ob/gyn they will butcher me during the c-section (typical hyperparanoid jew). I am leaning, however, towards the suburban hospital with a new ob/gyn because I don't want to share a room with some of these characters that deliver at this hospital, and I've heard the nursery isn't too fabulous there either.

What do you think???

I think it sounds like a good idea to switch.

If this was your first child, I think it would be easier to travel further for the hospital-- but with a child already at home, and a repeat c-section-- think about how great it is to be delivering so close to home and the fact that you'll be in the hospital for 4 days. Meet with some reccos from your RE and then make your decision.

This is coming from someone whose hospital is 5 miles away-- but can take 20 mins, or over an hour to get there-- it can be a little unnerving sometimes.

I would switch, there are MANY great OB's , you have time to get to know them and make sure you are comfortable

I would definitley try and see a new one - if it ends up that you don't like them for whatever reason, you can always switch back to the one that you already are familiar with.

honestly, if it were me i would go with the OB who is a great surgeon - someone i was SURE would put me back together nicely.

you will have to deal with the less-than-ideal hospital for just a few days... but you will have that surgery site for the rest of your life. best to make sure it's done as well as possible.

I would check out the new one as the facility and the location sounds great. Good luck with your decision.

That's a tough decision. After all it is your body and you've had a good experience with him. But if you have to travel a ridiculous amount of time I would think going to him would be very hard to do. My hospital is 1 hr away from my house and that's the furthest I would go. Looks like you've got a tough decision. Good luck.

I'd probably switch if the idea of having to deliver in the less than desirable hospital is going to worry you throughout your entire pregnancy - KWIM?

you KNOW you love this guy, so if you DO switch, worse case scenario, you switch back to him - No harm in that.
If you do have to do that, you just tell him you really wanted to be closer to home to deliver, but when push came to shove, having him as your MD was more important to you -

I would switch and ask your prior OB to recommend a new OB associated with the hospital close to you.
