Authorities: Diluting Formula To Save Cash Almost Killed Baby

i don't know about you guys but i had no idea this could happen Chat Icon

TAMPA - A financially strapped young mother trying to stretch her infant formula supply almost killed her newborn, hospital officials say.

The 20-year-old mother diluted the formula too much, causing the 5-month-old boy to suffer water intoxication this weekend, said Will Darnall, a spokesman for University Community Hospital in Tampa.

Doctors used sodium treatments and drugs to save the boy, Darnall said. He is on the recovery floor of the hospital's pediatric care center and his prognosis is good.

UCH's chief of pediatrics, James Orlowski, says parents never should use more water than recommended when mixing formula because babies literally can drown from the water intake. The mother told hospital workers the cost of formula, about $15 per can, was more than she could afford and she didn't realize it was harmful to try to stretch out the supply.

The mother, who has not been identified publicly, will talk to the media this afternoon. She said she hopes her story will help educate other parents who may be doing the same thing to stretch their money.

How sad is it that someone even has to do that because of the formula expense? Chat Icon

It is sad that you think you have to stretch formula because you can't afford it.

I think formula should say *clearly* that you cannot use more water than needed or it could be harmful to the baby.

So sad, i saw this last nite, right after they showed those poor babies in china suffering from melanine poisining from the company trying to bulk up their formula. My heart goes out to these families.

There's so many resources for mom who can't feed their babies, i hope WIC gets the word out to these young moms and all moms that's there help out there and not to endanger the babies.

What other resources are there other than WIC? That's the only one I've heard of that pays for formula, and sadly not everyone qualifies. Maybe that was the case with this mother, who knows.

Food banks, red cross, churches, pediatrician-ask for free samples...
Here in CT, there's a specific group that just collects diapers and formula for babies and gives them to needy families.

With the exception of the ped. I'm not so sure any of those would offer a steady supply of formula for an infant. Table food, yes. Not trying to be argumentative, but I know someone that needed help and WIC was the only place she could get formula.

I know you aren't being argumentativeChat Icon We just dont' know the whole story with her and why and what's in her life right now to try and figure out why. Honestly she prob really didn't know what too much water would do.
But i just hope moms would try ALL routes before even thinking of diluting formula. We dont' know all the info about this mom, but she's young and didn't say if there was a dad involved..so single and can't afford formula, i'm sure she'd prob qualify for WIC. I know a couple here in CT that made about 30K a year (mom didn't work, dad did) and qualified for WIC for their baby girl. They didn't even know about WIC until I told them about it..It's sad...

Personally, I would eat 1 meal a day and go hungry and try every route before i put my babies in danger.

And the food banks here in CT do distribute formula :)

While I really do feel for this mom, I am pretty sure it states right on the formula cans that you are not supposed to dilute RTF or add more water than instructed or it can be harmful to the baby. I don't know what other people do, but I was sure to read the instructions on EVERYTHING where the baby was/is concerned.

I donate formula often to our church food bank.

So sad but maybe she should have tried a little harder to get assistance.Chat Icon

Thankfully this little boy will be okay Chat Icon

I have three large similac containers (unopened) that are good until 2011 left over from Lucas...if we don't need them I am going to donate them.

Where can I donate formula...I'll check with my church but anyone know of places that will accept it...and you feel would be the most beneficial to send them to?

I have done this as well even with baby food that we never used. I have also given some to a friend of mine who drops off baby food and baby clothing/blankets to a woman's shelter which is next door to her husband's firehouse.

Thankfully he will be OK....

What's sad is that a ped can call in for a free case of formula for their patient if need be...I dont know if carnation has a program but Mead Johnson does. I actually received 2 cases of powdered formula from Mead Johnson...I dont think peds do enough sometimes helping out their patients who are most at risk. I always asked for formula each and every time I went to the ped. I had to swallow my pride each time..but truth was last year was a tough one and we needed to save every dime we could.

Im sitting here thinking about what a great resource LIF was for Caden..Ive been so fortunate to receive a ton of cans of formula from LIFers. B/C of friendships Ive made on here I dont think I'll have to buy Caden any clothes for quite some time.
