Self soothing

Is there any way to help your dc self soothe? My son has no clue how to self soothe, which makes things hard at night and for naps. Any suggestions? I know in time, this hopefully will fix itself... but is there any way to speed up the process? (he does take a pacifier but that doesn't always do it for him)

How old is he? I used to lie DD in her crib with her FP Aquarium going and that is how she first learned to fall asleep on her own. I also used the Baby Einstein CD's for her.

We have a sound machine in his room. We also have been using the aquarium thingy. He has a little comfort blankie, stuffed animals in his crib, tiny love mobile... etc... but nothing works. Chat Icon

DS is 4 1/2 months old.

I have a sleep sheep for DD. It plays different nature sounds. It has a timer also. You can get it at BRU or Amazon.

Re: Self soothing

honestly, at that point the only thing that worked for my son was rocking him. He even took a paci but that wouldn't work. Sorry! By 6 months it will get better! Chat Icon

Yeah the only thing that soothes him is bouncing him lightly, but it gets so exhausting and the heavier he gets...

He loves sucking on his fingers/thumb during the course of the day. But he just hasn't thought to do it at night or for naps i guess. Chat Icon

I agree. DS was rocked until 6 months it was hte only thing that would work...and trust me he is no lightweight...23 lbs by 7 months I believe. Then at 6 months he just didnt want to be rocked, into the crib with his mobile and off to sleep he would go....

Until he learned to stand at 9 months, now we are re learning how to self soothe again! Chat Icon

I rock DD until she is almost asleep. Then I put her in the crib still a little awake.

When I first started doing this, she would wake up the second I tried to put her in the crib. It would take her sometimes an hour before she fell back asleep bc she was used to me rocking her till she was completely asleep. I let her lay awake and would only keep going in to give her her pacifier. I wouldnt talk to her. By the second day she was a lot better at falling asleep on her own

But to be clear, I still rock her but the second her eyes start to close but she is still awake, I put her in the crib.

Re: Self soothing

The ONE thing we learned from our failed CIO attempt was self soothing.

We put Christopher in his crib with his pacifier and his blankie (a waffle weave receiving blanket) and he would just do it. He does rub the blankie on his face to comfort himself. I know that would freak a lot of people out, but he doesn't fall asleep with it on his face.

He still does it. I am nervous though, he loves this thing and it is discontinued!Chat Icon Chat Icon
