When are you supposed to convert DC from a rear-facing to a front-facing car seat?
DS is at the 20lb max limit for his infant seat and I want to get the convertible one tomorrow, but because he is not 20lbs AND 1 year old, do I have to keep the seat rear-facing until he turns one, next March??

So I thought... I actually just double checked my infant seat's specs online, and the max is 22 lbs, so he hasn't "officially" outgrown it yet, but will before he turns one. I guess I'll get the convertible one but keep him rear-facing until then.

Just FYI, I moved DD out of the infant carrier and into the convertible seat well before she was 20 lbs (my back couldn't take it anymore!), but she has remained rear-facing since then (she is now 16 months). Don't know when I'll turn her around ...

And on the flip side
My DS stayed in the infant carrier until 11 months and then spent 1 month rear facing and we switched him at 1 year to forward facing. My DH is an EMT for the FDNY and is certified to install seats and he says it is perfectly safe

Great! Your DH (and the rest of you) have reassured me. Funny, I know I read all of these things while I was pregnant and registering for stuff, but now my brain is like mush!
I guess I'll do the same- move him to the new seat when he looks too uncomfortable and keep it rear-facing until he hits 1.

ABSOLUTE MINIMUM is 1 year and 20 lbs. For me, the MINIMUM is never enough for my DC. It is tremendously safer for DC to keep them rear-facing as long as possible. 18 months is much better. Even if their feet touch the back of the seat, or are bent close to their chest, it's no problem. Keep them rear facing as long as you possibly can. Some parents keep DC rear-facing until 2 years. Some European countries recommend keeping DC rear-facing until 4 years (assuming the seat can handle the weight and height, of course)

12 months is also the MINIMUM. The carseat guy told us 15 months was better.

Yeah, I was surprised when I read that, too. I can't imagine many 4yos rear-facing, but most could stay rear-facing up until 2.
