Re: Any other companies cancelling their XMAS party?
Ours cut back last year and only did appetizers and drinks for 2 hours right after work, no guests. They are doing the same this year.
I'm completely fine with that as long as I still get a bonus!

Re: Any other companies cancelling their XMAS party?
The company I freelance for just cancelled this behemoth of a party and added two days vacation. One day for freelancers....
My main company is super small, so I am assuming we will still have the XMAS party (although I am a bit scared because they ended up at a strip club last year) We just went to Stanton Social last week to celebrate landing some big accounts...although this week has been stressful to say the least... I would have to wait until January to let you know. Being that we are so busy for the holiday season, they do the party in January here LOL

And there are NO HINTS except we don't need our passports or our skiing clothes....this could be amazing or horrible.
but to be honest, in the past they have performed spectacularly in the party/trips away department (Dublin, Paris to see Madonna, London, Swanky Hotels, very posh food...) so hopefully it will be great fun.

Re: Any other companies cancelling their XMAS party?
our dept usually has a ginormous party at Chelsea Piers. Last year it was 2000 people.
It's nuts but we get wrecked, eat and dance. Then cars take us home..although we share rides.
None of that is happening.
These venues are going to really feel it.

Re: Any other companies cancelling their XMAS party?
Nope, ours is still on. Both the firm-wide party AND the department party for the clients are still happening. Our business development department was surprised, but I think our clients are happy because a lot of them are canceling THEIR parties... so they get to eat and drink on our dime.
BUt if it turns out we're not getting holiday bonuses I'll be pizzed that we had the parties instead. I'd rather have the money than the party.

Re: Any other companies cancelling their XMAS party?
I know that the other divisions of my company have received e-mails to cancel the holiday parties. I can only assume that we will cancel our also...but you never know. If we have a really good month for Nov and Dec...they may still have the holiday party

Re: Any other companies cancelling their XMAS party?
No, bu t it's for employees only this year. It's always been us plus SO's but not this year.
Personally, I say split up the party $$ and give it to us as a bonus (since I know we won't be getting one this year).

Maybe I'm in the minority but I always thought Holiday parties were silly. I would rather them take the money spent and split it up as a bonus than attend a party with people I work with.
I agree too. I'm not really interested in socializing with most people at work outside of working hours. A lunch is OK with me, but I don't really care if they have a party at night or not.
We also have to pay to go to ours, so that definitely affects my opinion.

We aren't having one either. But I am not really sad about it. I see enough of my co-workers as it is, do I really want to spend my free time with them as well?

Re: Any other companies cancelling their XMAS party?
Yes....there is no money.
ETA: Our holiday party consisted of our Dean taking his admin out for a private lunch to thank us for all our hard work and continued achievement. It was usually to Pace's or somewhere near by where we spent the entire afternoon out of the office and it was nice. It used to be about 15 of us. But no more...SUNY is having $$$ issues.

I don't think ours will be.
The last time things were bad here (2001), we cut back but didn't cancel & things aren't as bad here yet as they were then. Things are more likely to slow down next year.
Same here.

ITA!!!
I dug around and found out that ours is still happening. And the reason was that "the economy has everyone down, let's not lower morale even more"
Uh hello, save the money on the party (the food and drinks usually s*ck anyway)
We get a $100 Amex GC every year, and we're probably not even getting that. Save the money on the party and give us a little bonus, that'll surely raise morale.
No freaking kidding! Ours is not cancelled unfortunately. I hate the holiday party, and all forced workplace socialization. To top it off, its right next to the World Trade Center this year...I planned on never visiting that area for the rest of my life if I could help it.
