Re: Did you have to show your ID when you voted?

Get this one. I got married in 2004. I was registered to vote under my maiden name. Last year I called to ask if I was registered under my new name and they said no you have to re-register under your new name which I did. Well I got two voter registration cards...one in my married name, one in my maiden name. Since i still have a valid NYS license in my maiden name I could go vote twice if I wanted too.

It should be better monitored.

We're in NJ and they checked ours.

I'm in NJ too and just came back from voting. They did not ask to see my ID, but I had to sign my name in a book next to my signature from my voter registration application. I guess they just verify the signatures match? Chat Icon

No. There was a piece on NPR about this actually. In NY state, you are NOT required to show ID, unless it is your first time voting at a location and you registered by mail. Otherwise, no, you should not have to show ID.

Re: Did you have to show your ID when you voted?

No, it seemed as if they didn't need it. I showed them, but they didn't care. My signature has changed since I first voted and they didn't check that at all.

Another thing that surprised me was they let my DH come in the booth with me. He is not a citizen and I said he might become a citizen someday and he is curious about the voting process. There was no fight about it, they said fine. He is really interested in US politics and was just curious about our election process. He said it was complicated compared to Australia and the machine was complicated.

I am surprised he was even allowed in with me.

Re: Did you have to show your ID when you voted?

I didn't, and DH and I discussed it because it concerned us as well. I had to sign my name, and it was the same one I signed in a book from the primaries, so they could match signatures. And I had to show my ID when I voted in the primary. But it bugged me, too.

Re: Did you have to show your ID when you voted?

I had to show picture ID and my voter registration card, then they looked me up on their computer then made me sign a sheet and compared the signatures. Then another poll worker escorted me to the voting booth and explained in detail how the computer ballot worked. I was impressed.

Re: Did you have to show your ID when you voted?

I didnt. Plus, my mom went to vote in the town I grew up in, and apparently I'm still on the books there also. So in theory I could go there tonight and vote again....

You would have to know the name, address and signature....and if the real person came and saw another signature, there would be an issue.

In NY, you don't need ID - but you start with an address, go to your district, give your name which they find on a sheet and sign.....little room for error.

I could easily vote for my mother. And what happens if there IS an issue.. then they have to back-track... meanwhile.. if they required an ID originally, there wouldn't be an issue in the first place.

Re: Did you have to show your ID when you voted?

NY does not require ID. Its b/c of the amount of extra time it would take , and they have your signature on file and should be checking they match.

I have never heard of a story of identity theft to vote..and hey theres a 50/50 chance the stealer would vote for you Chat Icon

Re: Did you have to show your ID when you voted?

It's illegal for them to ask you to show ID. It is not a requirement to have ID in the state and therefore asking you to show it to vote would be impeding your ability to vote.

I was just going to post this.

You can even have a fake ID with the fake name, but chances are the signature will not match!
