Re: Flu Shot

My doctor's office gave me a preservative-free shot a few weeks ago. I know it's recommended for pregnant women, but you need to do what makes you feel comfortable. For me, the benefits far outweighed any of the risks, especially since I'll be giving birth during flu season.

Same with me - I got it at the OB's office. I will be giving birth in January and have a 2 year old (who also got the shot) and felt like it was the right thing to do for me. Also, the shot is passed to the baby, so it is like them getting the shot as well. I know with DD I was at the mall a few weeks after she was born since it was winter and I HAD to get out of the house. I felt much more comfortable doing that knowing that I had had the flu shot when I was pregnant with her as well.

Re: Flu Shot

When I just went for my check up last week, my doc offered it to me. So, I just did it-- I had it on my list to ask about anyway. It is recommended for pregnant women to get a shot though.

Have you spoken with your OB/GYN about the benefits and risks with getting the flu shot in your first trimester?

My doctor feels that the benefits far outweigh the risks of the flu, even in the first trimester. It's your call, but should you get the flu, it could be very dangerous for you and the baby. My doctor had the preservative-free version, but said the amount of thermisol in the regular version is minimal and would have no effect on the fetus. The Centers for Disease Control recommend it for all pregnant women, including the first tri.

Me neither. I have not had the flu in 20 years, most years the vaccine doesn't even impact the strain of flu that is out and my husband and I do not want to expose our baby to meds like that before they are even out of the womb. I am seeing a new Dr this week so I will see if they have any new insight but I am probably not getting it.

I've had the flu shot twice in my lifetime.

First year was no problem.

Second year was awful. I got sick two days after I got the shot. 4 weeks after that I was the sickest I had ever been in my life. It took me weeks to get over that flu, and I vowed never to get another flu shot again.

If it means I go against dr's advice, so be it.

This was my dilemna last week at the doctor. They only had the version with a traceof thermisol, which made me a bit hestitant to get.

I'm sorry you got so sick they flu is horrible!

Unfortunately the flu shot takes I believe 2 weeks to build immunity so you can still get the flu in those two weeks (even ones given in the shot) so they say if you get the flu in the 1st two weeks it isn't from the shot but a horrible coincidence. Also the shot only covers certain strains so you can still get a strain not covered by the shot.

I totally see from these stories why people would be worried and not get one.

I get one - my OB told me to wait until the 2nd trimester - but I have seen what the flu can do to a pregnant person (and children) so I am getting one.

you are right it does take 2 weeks to gain immunity, i caved and i got it. I decided that the pros out weigh the cons, and i got the preservative free, my doctor said i should get it.
