Any Chinese mommies or daddies.....

I am not chinese, however my husband is. He is in no way traditional and knows nothing about his culture. His mother and father are telling us we have to hold a banquet for the baby within a month or two after the baby is born. I am told this is pretty much for their friends and relatives to see the baby. My husband is just going along with whatever his parents say, but I am not sure what exactly this banquet is all about and I cannot get a straight answer. I feel as though when I get there, things that I am not comfortable with may be done. I tried to google it, but there isnt a whole lot of concrete information.

If anyone knows anything about this, I would love to get a little info!

TIA

Trish

My husband is Chinese. I have been to several red egg banquets that his cousins have held for thier children.

It is a tradition to celebrate the 1 month anniversary of the child's birth. It allows you to introduce the child to the family. In the past you would also announce the baby's name.

I'm Chinese and I can tell you you're not obligated to have that if you don't want. It's a pretty traditional affair that my own husband likes to refer to as "Congrats Your Baby Survived One Month Celebration".. ;)

During the celebration you feed your guests with goodies and introduce your baby. You also show your face to friends and family after being confined to your home for 1 month eating chicken with ginger broth soup.

In return, they will give you a red envelope stuffed with money or jewelry for the baby...

Personally, I think 1 month is too soon to expose your baby to so many people. There's also something called the 100 day after birth celebration where you can host a similar party. That will give you more time to recover and plan for the celebration...

FM me if you need more info. I'm not doing it because if I choose that my family might pressure me into doing some of the other traditional stuff like not leaving the house for an entire month! Etc. Not exactly practical these days....
