homemade gifts

my family and i decided that because of the economy, and our own financial situations, that we will limit our gifts to each other to either something homemade or something that costs $5 or less.

if you were going to give a homemade gift, what would it be?

(this is a hypothetical post - i am not looking for ideas, i am curious about what other people would do Chat Icon )

Re: homemade gifts

I would give food....specifically baked treats.

Each year my sister and I have a tradition where we spend allll day a few days before christmas making like 7-10 varieties of cookies from scratch. everything from butterscotch to chocolate chip to peanut butter to macaroons, etc. we make an average of about 13 or 14 cookie platters....putting all the different ones in it--throw some candies & chocolate and then wrap it up with cellophane and a bow. the plates and cookie cellophane bags we wrap them in are $1 each! the ingredients spread among 14 people---is like a couple of bucks each...and each year everyone is beyond excited to get their platter.

i would knit a scarf, although the type of yarn i would use would be way out of the $5 budget.

i would also do something photography related if i had a great photo or series of photos of the person i'd be giving them to. for my MIL one year i created an album of progression pics of my DD's first year.

we bake cookies for our neighbors.

if i knew what i was doing, i'd love to make a stationary/card set.

Re: homemade gifts

I do art so its not far fetched for me - in the past I've made mix cds with hand-drawn covers, knitted scarves, dyed faux-silk scarves, comic books, personalized sweatshirts w/ stitched on letters (ala neighborhoodies), or small framed artwork

I made a bookcase for my sister one year. Custom-fit to a particular wall she had.

I'd probably make some piece of furniture or something....

.... or fix their computer. The relatives are always asking for that.... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: homemade gifts

I'd probably do food -
Or a plain matted and framed photograph of someone or something I knew was important to the person I was giving the gift to -

I don't like to force my 'taste' on anyone with gifts they would have to display somehow .......KWIM?
I don't like it when it's done to me -

I love cooking- so probably one of the following:
limoncello (vodka steeped with lemons and then drained and mixed with simple syrup)
pear butter (there's a great recipe from bon appetite that i'm dying to try)
some type of homemade jam

Re: homemade gifts

If they like plants...

Cut off a stem of one of your house plants and put it in water for a few weeks. Once it grows roots you can plant it in an inexpensive small planter. Great for a window sil.

Or get some seeds of whatever type of plant, flower, veggie you want (or think they'd be interested in) and plant the seeds in a small planter. You can even paint a cute design on the planter. Then create directions on your computer on how to care for it.
