What happens at the Level II? Any more blood tests after AFP?

I tested normal for my 16 week AFP test. Does that mean I don't have any more blood tests? I hate needles.

I know you find out the sex of your baby at the Level II. What else happens?

You will have the glucose test at about 28w. It is a blood test.

The level II is an in depth sono where the tech or doc does tons of measurements of key bones, looks at heart and brain etc.

In addition to the glucose test, you may have a blood test for iron. I had a finger prick test for iron at 24 weeks and will have another one at 32 weeks.

I thought the glucose test was a drinking test!

I've never heard of the iron test. Is this mandatory?

You do have to take a drink but then your blood is drawn in order for them to check your sugar.

They have to test your glucose levels, which is done by drawing blood 1 hour after finishing the drink. If you fail the 1 hour, they draw your blood 4 times for the 3 hour test. It sucks, but it's really important to take the test.

I don't know if the iron test is mandatory, but I assume it's probably important to take it. I don't like needles either, but it's just a really quick finger prick. I got the results back a few minutes later. I didn't know I was going to have an iron test until the nurse told me about it at the appointment.

Do we even have to do the glucose test?

I pee on a stick, which I believe is a glucose test every week.

I definitely don't want to skip on the genetic/growth tests but I wonder if it is necessary to take all these additional tests?

I think the glucose test is one of the most important tests you take during pregnancy. If you have GD and don't treat it properly, that can lead to a lot of complications. As far as I know, it's a mandatory test.

I don't do well giving blood and didn't have a good experience at my 3 hour test. I would never consider not taking the test though.

Re: What happens at the Level II? Any more blood tests after AFP?

The blood test is way more specific than the urine stick. The stick is not exclusively for glucose either (from their website:Tests for protein, nitrate, glucose, and leukocytes in urine.)

It is incredibly important to take the glucose test as GD can lead to other complications if untreated.

They will also do a "swab" to test for Strep B at 32 weeks. Your Dr may or may not do an iron test, but again it is pretty important. If you have a negative blood type you may also require Rhogham shots (2 normally).

ETA: At the Level II, besides possibly finding out the gender, the sonogram tech takes very specific measurements of certain body parts such as the bones in the arms and legs, kidneys, heart, brain, spinal column, checks the flow to and from the unbilical cord, head circumference, pallette, measures fluid levels and a whole bunch more that I cannot remember.

I agree! I had a tough time with the glucose tests too bc of bad veins but it is super important. As far as the iron test mine was taken during the 1hr in a different vial but it wasn't a separate needle. In CT they also require HIV and chlamidia testing a second time so this was also done at my glucose test (just multiple vials).

The only other needle I faced was the rhogam shot which is required if you have a negative blood type.

IDK if the iron test is mandatory. I got a list at the beginning from my OBs office of all the tests I'd have done and when, and there was no mention of an iron test.

IMO, the Glucose test is very important and should be done.

Here in NJ, they do all the HIV, and STD bloodwork at the first appointment. There's also a state law they have to test for ghonorea as well.

I'll also have 3 more sono's in my 3rd trimester due to my low PAPP-A results from ultrascreen.

Re: What happens at the Level II? Any more blood tests after AFP?

With my current m/s, I cannot fathom drinking the glucose test liquid. Currently if I drink more than maybe 3-4 ounces at a time, I gag.

Hopefully I will feel better by the time it's for my glucose test.

My obgyn only gave me pregnancyweekly's "Testing Options in your 1st and 2nd Trimesters" pamphlet. I thought I was finally done with all my tests. Apparently not....

Mine's being done in two weeks, I'll still be in my 2nd trimester. That's when my OB wanted me to do it.

I'm sure this was meant jokingly, but you need to suck it up and do what is best for you and your baby.
There are a lot of people who would give ANYTHING to be where you are. If you think the baby is "trouble" now, just wait until after he/she is born.

Yes, this was written with a joking tone! Hope I didn't offend anyone.

Re: What happens at the Level II? Any more blood tests after AFP?

the glucose test which you have to drink a some what ok/yucky drink then a finger prick.

If your levels are high they may want to draw blood to double check. If they are still high then you may have to go for the 3 hour in which you drink the drink and then every hour you have to get blood drawn.

I had this done with DS and it sucked... And they said they may want me to take they glucose test early to watch me since I have already had GD.
