Unwanted Advice: What is the most absurd pregnancy "advice" you've received?

I feel like people are constantly giving me advice that I do not want. Most of the advice comes from people who have never had a baby! It's just random things they've heard here and there.

Actually most of the advice comes from my mom. She calls me every other day giving me new advice. I think she will hear something from a friend or read an article and tell me. She is driving me crazy.

Wait until you have the baby...my SIL, my 44 year old childless sister in love loves to tell me how I am rasing my son wrong....I can't even tell you some of the horrible things she has said to me. So just tell these people to beat it. Remember what they say, opinions are like coolies...everyone has one!

um i love my grandmother telling me that I need to have lots of milk and dairy, and then proceed to ask me if I'm excercising, since that will obviously make the baby fall right out of me, and my labor painless and fast...Chat Icon

Chat Icon Please, the list is already endless and I'm only 15 weeks !!!

The most ridiculous to me is .......'You're going to continue to COMMUTE into MANHATTAN? - You CAN'T do that while you're pregnant, you'll have to stop working very early ........"

Ummmm, hello, I get on the train, I sit my a$$ down for an hour nap, I get off the train and I get that a$$ some exercise by walking to the office ...........what about this is bad for me or the baby??

Ugh, me too. I love the people who comment on my daily commute - 99% of them have never even worked in Manhattan. Be quiet!

Just wait another month or two... then you'll understand Chat Icon .
I was fine with it in the beginning, now I am so uncomfortable on the train I can't take it anymore. It adds an extra level of exhaustion to my day.

I was constantly yelled at by my mom and MIL about reaching for things above my head. Apparently there was an old wives tale that if you stretched and reached above your head, the umbilical cord would wrap around the baby's neck.

(for the record, I still reached above my head and DS was born with the cord around his neck twice, but I firmly believe that reaching for things had nothing to do with it)

Please Chat Icon I'm sure by that time EVERYTHING will be uncomfortable !!! And really, 'the big bad city' is not as dangerous as everyone makes it out to be - Pregnant women do it every single day - they all survive ..........what ? I"m special or something !!! Chat Icon

Yes, pretty much everything will be uncomfortable, lol!!!
I think its the commute itself more than the train or the city for me. 2 hours each way adding an extra 4 hrs to my day Chat Icon
But you're right, its done all the time and most do not stop working that early unless there is a medical issue!!

People love to give unsolicited advice, I think its a hobby for some.

Re: Unwanted Advice: What is the most absurd pregnancy "advice" you've received?

When I was PG with DS I got so swollen that I had elephant feet. I did not have preeclampsia. I was being checked all the time.

So at around 36 weeks, a woman in my old job told me that I should really have a Dr. check it out.

Geez, I am going to the doc every week. Don't you think they know about it?

Re: Unwanted Advice: What is the most absurd pregnancy "advice" you've received?

here is the most recent....

DD has had the hiccups like crazy. Dr says its completely normal and she's just getting rid of extra gas and to just let it be. Not to give water bc it can throw off her electrolytes and such. DH and I say 'OK' and that was that.

WELL...... MIL hears her hiccups over the phone and says 'you should give her a few ounces of water'. We tell her, very politely, that the DR said not to and her response was ' well who knows more about this? some MAN? or a woman who has had 4 children??' UMM.... HELLO???!!! THE DR KNOWS MORE!!!!!!!!

God she's going to put me in a nut house! Chat Icon

Ditto, I would roll my eyes at ppl saying how you're going to do the commute, at 31 weeks, I'm over it...I'm getting out of breath just walking half an inch and then the walk to the office is just grueling, by the time I get in I feel like a truck has hit me a few times over!!!
