No sure if anyone posted this. Re: Joe the Plumber

Meet the Real Joe the Plumber:
At the debate Wednesday, John McCain kept bringing up the "fact" that Joe the Plumber would be taxed more under Obama's tax plan. The trouble with making Joe a national hero for conservatives is that the national media descended on Joe. They learned a couple of things, like (1) his name is Sam, not Joe, (2) he does not have a plumbing or contractor's license, items required by city ordinance, (3) the taxable income from his plumbing business would qualify him for a tax cut under the Obama plan, not an increase, and (4) he has an outstanding lien for over $1000 in backtaxes he owes. Maybe he wasn't such a great choice as role model for McCain after all.

Re: No sure if anyone posted this. Re: Joe the Plumber

This is SO absurd

he said he works for a plumber. The fact that he owes taxes? so what? ive owed them in the past. Does that make me a bad person that I had a debt? We are talking about 1000; not 100000.

He posed a question to Obama, "IF i bought the business and made x amount of money, WOULD i be taxed more?"
It is a valid question. What distrubs me more is Obama's answer to "Spread the wealth"

Let him redistribute HIS income; not mine!!!

besides, there are A LOT of people that use their middle name as their name - his middle name is Joe. Big deal!

That is supposedly not true - he was on Good Morning America and 'set the record straight' that he is registered to vote.

Re: No sure if anyone posted this. Re: Joe the Plumber

Just five days ago, Mr. Wurzelbacher, 34, lived in anonymity, a single father who worked all day at his plumbing business and came home to fix dinner and help his son with his homework, as he said on national television.

But he became the hero of conservatives and Republicans when he stopped Mr. Obama, who was campaigning on Shrewsbury Street on Sunday, and asked whether he believed in the American dream. Mr. Wurzelbacher said he was concerned about having to pay taxes as he reached a point where he could afford to buy his own plumbing business, one he said would draw income of $250,000 a year.

“I’m getting ready to buy a company that makes $250,000 to $280,000 a year,” he told Mr. Obama during an exchange that was filmed and later showed up on YouTube. “Your new tax plan is going to tax me more, isn’t it?”

That encounter led to New York Post headlines, appearances on the Fox News Channel and interviews with conservative groups, who seized on part of Mr. Obama’s reply.

“I think that when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody,” Mr. Obama had said.

officials said Wurzelbacher's name was misspelled in the voter registration database

ok- I take it back

I am willing to research and take back things that are proven not true

but he does owe the state of Ohio $1200

Re: No sure if anyone posted this. Re: Joe the Plumber

call me skeptical..but I think that Joe the Plumber was put up to this.

It all sounds way too planned and weird to me.

He is no way ready to buy the plumbing biz. He said it in an interview.

he was put there to bring up a hypothetical situation.

I know that sounds far fetched too but anything to win..kwim? Desperate times call for desperate measures and it was perfectly timed for the debate.

Poor guy though..too bad McCain didn't vet this before he brought it up. Sam the plumber is getting his 15 minutes of fame but getting a full body cavity search as well.

I wish they did half as much research on the candidates as they did on joe the plumber. Honestly, he asked a question that needed to be asked, so does that mean that people should be going through his trash?

If he's ready to buy this business that yields approximately 250-280K annually why can't he pay the taxes he owes?

Sounds hokey to me. Chat Icon

Re: No sure if anyone posted this. Re: Joe the Plumber

Am I the only one who doesn't care about Joe the Plumber? Does the fact that he owes back taxes really make a difference in this election? I care about the issues, not Joe. I don't even care if he was put up to it by McCain (which I sincerely doubt). If I met Obama, I'd have far more difficult questions for him - and I'm sure everyone would think I was being paid by the McCain campaign or something.

I could have done without hearing Joe the Plumber 26 times at the debate - but the illustration does not make the ISSUES he was supposed to be used to illustrate any less important. (And, no, I don't mean that in a partisan way. I mean that the issues of the proposed tax plans are important whether we use Joe the Plumber or Mary the Mortician to illustrate them or Fred the Farmer to illustrate them.)

As for his name... Isn't his middle name Joseph? It's very common in other parts of the country for people to go by their middle names. Again, I don't really care what his name is or who he is. He's not running. I care about the issues his story was used to illustrate. The fact that he owes back taxes, for example, is absolutely meaningless to me in terms of the election.

Re: No sure if anyone posted this. Re: Joe the Plumber

Well I for one don't like when people make a bunch of unfunded assumptions about Barrack Obama, and in all fairness its not right to do it to Joe or Sam the plumber.

The one thing I don't agree with him about is why anyone would complain that if and when I make more money I will be a higher tax bracket, I mean seriously do you expect to pay the same no matter what the income level

I don't really care about Joe the Plumber either--he was used as an example and that's that.

I don't understand why paying slghtly more in taxes would prevent him from starting a business that would earn $250-280 K a year. And my heart doesn't bleed for poor Joe if he needs to pay a bit more, somewhere I saw that he would pay $900 a year more under Obama's plan than McCain's if he earned $280K, sorry I don't have the source, but I think this was on Bloomberg. $900 more isn't going to break him if he's earning that much money (which isn't likely).

Almost as laughable when Obama says he is not taxing anyone who makes less than 250K, until he figures out that he still can't manage to pay for all of the things he has to do...that number will be down to 125k within the first year of him being in the office.

that is what i meant - he would impose no additional taxes. Not that noone would be taxed - other wise a whole bunch of people would cut their work week in half !!!
