Bumpers..
So my Mom told me that bumpers are a big No-no and can increase SIDS.
Is this true?
If so, what else comes with a bedding set? Why do they all sell bumpers with the set if they are not recomended?

Re: Bumpers..
There is a lot of controversey with bumbers and there are many who do belive they can increase your chances for SIDS. Most will recommend that you use the bumpers until your baby can start to pull up then remove the bumpers all together or replace it with a breathable bumper.
Companies sell them because they can make money off of them. They also sell quilts and blankets which is also a no no for a newborn. I personally wouldn't use one, but google it and I'm sure you'll find tons of info.

Re: Bumpers..
We will be using the bumpers until she can mover herself/roll over. Then they will come out until she can sit up by herself and move around the crib easily.
I think the risk is that the move towards teh bumper and push their little faces against the bumper adn not be able to move away.
I am having custom bedding made so was are only doing the bumper and skirt, since you aren't suppose to use a blanket on them either and I don't need it for decoration.
ETA: WHile I'm not sure that this is not a cause of SIDS I am more concerned that her mattress, and linens are all organic or made of natural fibers. I think that the chemicals that are leached from regular mattresses and breathed in by a baby play a bigger component.
There is also a new study that says having a ceiling fan in the room helps reduce SIDS rates. The thought is that it circualtes stagnant carbon monoxide filled air by the babys mouth. Also keeping the room around 67-68 degrees while sleeping no warmer
DO what makes you comfortable.

Re: Bumpers..
We decided not to get bedding sets because of all the things in the bedding set you're not supposed to use. We registered for breathable bumpers instead. When the babies are old enough to use blankets and stuff we will look into getting them then.

Re: Bumpers..
I got a bedding set and will use the bumpers until the baby can roll. Then, I'll probably get breathable bumpers.

Re: Bumpers..
We received our bedding set for DD and honestly, it was such a waste. I love it but it's so expensive especially considering we didn't use most of it. The bumpers were great until we actually brought DD home from the hospital-then they made me so nervous that I took them out. The comforter, we have never used. It's too pretty to throw on the floor when she played, it's too dangerous to leave in the crib.
For the next one, we will just buy the sheets, the crib skirt and the drapes/valances from whatever set we like.

Cranky Pants..
That was what I was thinking... Can you buy the set in pieces like that?
And what are breathable bumpers?
Geez, I have a lot to learn.
Thanks everyone.. I guess I have some researching to do.

Re: Bumpers..
I'm probably not going to do the bumpers. My sister put the breathable ones in my nephews crib, but as soon as he was able to start pulling hiimself up on his own, she took them out because he was standing on them.
IMO, it's just a waste of $$.

Re: Bumpers..
It depends on the set you like. Some sell it by piece, others don't.
Breathable bumpers are great. They keep all the body parts in the crib, older babies can't climb on them and if the baby rolls into them they are netted so babies can breath even if squished up against them. We got ours at BRU.

I didn't know a baby could stand on the breathable bumpers. Whenever DD tries they just fall down.

See my post above... older babies can climb on them. My sister caught my nephew doing it and promptly took them out because she was afraid of him getting caught in the bumper and hurting himself.

Re: Bumpers..
My DD has always been all over the crib so I decided to not use the bumpers I was concerned she would roll over and smash her face against them. Honestly you really don't need them - and yes they could be a sids risk - but that depends on your comfort level. There are plenty of parents who do use them. I know baby bargains recommended skipping them.
If you are concerned your child will put their arms or legs out of the crib you can get breathable bumpers - which are really thin and will keep them from putting limbs out of the crib but thin enough if they put their face against them at night they can easily breath.
The issue with Sids is a partly a re-breathing issue - it is the same issue if they pull a heavy blanket against their face or a stuff animal etc. It depends on what kind of sleeper you have and your comfort level. I know many people who put blankets in the crib and stuff animals at a young age. DD still sleeps in a basically empty crib. She is all over and often curls in a ball on her tummy so I worry she would either put her face on the bumpers or pull the blanket over her face.
