PSA-Keep your children REALLY close by in the town of Riverhead
I was at Tanger Outlets this afternoon & as I was walking to my car I noticed a child about 5 years old ALONE sitting on the sidewalk in front of a store sobbing. I turned around & went back to her to ask her where her mother was-she didn't speak or understand a word of English, a few seconds later a boy around 7 years old walked up to her & she was still crying & showing him that her knee was hurt. By now a few other adults had gathered around, we tried to ask the boy where their parents were, again-no English.
I called the police-told them there were two young children that didn't speak English without adults & one was possibly injured. They said they would send an Officer, they asked me if I'd wait with the children & I said I would & gave my name. Within a couple of minutes an older man walked up & the little girl started crying even more. I asked him if they were his children & he said yes, I asked why she was alone & he said "they are wild, she's playing games". Mind you this man was NOT ANYWHERE nearby when I found this child. I informed him that in America we don't leave small children unattended in public places.
11 minutes after I called the police I called back to say some sort of parent had arrived, if they still wanted to come & talk to them. The dispatcher for Riverhead police basically ripped my head off & informed me that "we have a lot going on right now, we'll get somebody there when we can, if you don't like it you can call the town & tell them we are short staffed. I've got an arrest & car accident & other things happening & I can't tell you exactly when we'll get there"
So I said "its a good thing I'm not a child abductor because I'd be on the LIE & halfway through Suffolk county already."
He responded "yeah I guess its a good thing-this is the best we can do"
So I called the town supervisors office & spoke to the deputy supervisor & I expressed my horror & told him that this is why children that are abducted are across state lines in a flash & I will contact the people that run Megans law in NY. I told him I'm a medical professional & I have an ethical responsibility to report children in situations of neglect or abuse & I would have expected more concern from the Riverhead police. He took my name & number & told me the police chief would contact me. Its been several hours & I guess he's too busy writing up fender benders to call me. Two of the woman that work in Tanger stood with me & waited & they both live in Riverhead & said the response time is SO SLOW its pathetic.
I'm furious.

Sadly, NOTHING about this story is shocking to me.
It's really a shame on SO many levels.
You (obviously) did the right thing. That man should be ashamed of himself for leaving those kids hanging around by themselves.
I hope you're going to call the Meghan's Law group, this deserves more attention.

and here I thought suffolk, with it's huge police budget and good rep, would never have a scenario like that.....

That is awful. You should have called the State Police instead of the Town. RH Town is incompetent. As for that parent and I use that term VERY loosely he is a complete jackass!

Because although we (east end towns) pay for Suffolk Police we have our own police forces which we also pay for it's a whole pizzing contest thing.

No, not even a little bit. They wanted to make Peconic County. Southold, Riverhead, Southampton and East Hampton towns but then it would be a big mess on who gets to pay for what with regards to courts, parks, etc. So they just leave it the way it is... and we keep paying

Its really disturbing that a motor vehicle accident takes precedent over what is basically an abandoned child.

i was just thinking Kelly, they probably get a ton of calls from people at the outlets about lost kids - who eventually get found by their parents. so maybe that's why they were aloof about it.
NOT saying that's the way to handle it, but it could be possible

Good for you Kelly for making the phone call, I think it's un acceptable that they couldn't send another car that wasn't that busy to come to the outlets, Instead of waiting for the phone call i would personally go up to the station and talk to the chief personally and Ask him 'WHY' wasn't there a car there ASAP after i called, What if these kids ended up kidnapped? They need a better system.

wow - this really is a shame 
I reported an ongoing child neglect issue to SCPD once and asked that someone come by to "watch" how they handle their kids. I was told that they don't babysit and that it was "cultural"
