Hmm, I thought I had a good idea about who I was voting for...
However, the idea of even considering going to war w/ Russia turns me off a bit w/ Palin.

Yikes! Did you say something about that being a possibility? Didn't we successful avoid that war several years ago?

no one "wants" to go to war with anyone else -- the bottom line is, if we have to enter into something obviously it will be due to their extreme actions -- not out of the clear blue sky. anyone who threatens our freedom or the freedom of others has to be dealt with. there are many ways, luckily, that we can go about avoiding this. i'm sure we'll exhaust all of those measures IF any of this happens.
i just can't worry about the 9384875487 "what ifs?" there are too many - and we need to deal with things as they come to us and in their priority order.

Danielle,
I agree, and it makes sense. However war with Russia would be a huge deal. You are talking about 2 countries w/ very harmful weapons. This is a situation between those countries and we should let them deal with it. I'm ok w/ sanctions, if need be. However, going to war w/ Russia would be a disaster.
of course I am sure it would be the last resort. Maybe I am just a little shocked that she would "go there" and even consider the idea as a possibility.
I just really feel that we should concentrate our efforts on defending ourselves against those who are direct threats to us (there are plenty) instead of fighting other countries battles. Just my feeling.

I agree with this. Why must WE always be the first to respond?

Re: Hmm, I thought I had a good idea about who I was voting for...
Regarding Russia - she said that Georgia and the Ukraine should be accepted to NATO and if Russia attacks or invades either region, the US would respond. When Gibson pressed her, saying "Would we go to war with Russia?" She said "Perhaps - that is the deal with NATO - when one country attacks a member of NATO, you respond." (my summary)
Palin is correct in her description and understanding of the rules of engagement re: NATO. . . but she missed a HUGE opportunity in explaining that as a member of NATO - we would not be responding alone - all of the members of NATO would respond.
But for me, what was MOST shocking was that she clearly did not know what the Bush doctrine was - the DEFINING piece of post 9/11 foreign policy.
DH - who is most likely voting for McCain - said "Oh dear Lord - get me Biden!"
Also - she didnt give a clear cut answer - but said that the USA should do everything they can against terrorism - and appeared to agree WITH OBAMA that we should be allowed to have strikes in Pakistan with or without Pakistan's permission. This is a foreign policy that McCain has VOCIFEROUSLY OPPOSED. So I think they need to clear that up a bit.

I truly believe that we will focus on what our pertinent issues are first. BUT if and that is a big *IF* another country does something to threaten innocent people's freedom -- thus threatening our freedom in the long-run we need to do something about it. First, we need to exhaust all of our options for avoiding war and then - if we need to, then we gotta do what we gotta do, KWIM? It is reality, unfortunately. We didn't get where we are now by turning a blind eye to other people in their time of need...
And, well, Palin went there because she was asked about it - flat out. In the interview Obama did with O'Reilly he spoke about the possibility of what Russia MAY or MAY NOT do with Georgia and what we would have to do in reaction to it -- his answer was very similar to what she said and what I am saying -- basically, we'll cross that bridge if and when we get there but we will, if we have to, protect our country and our freedom and defend that right for others.
...and we are the ones who have to respond b/c we are the role model for freedom and democracy in the world. This is America - this is our credo, this is what we are all about. We are the protector, we are the ones who went in there and opened up the concentration camps to free the victims of the holocaust -- because, if we didn't help them - who would have? I view the innocent people living in Georgia in a similar way.
I know not everyone sees it the way I do - but we need to protect others and ourselves -- if not for them then for us because if a country takes over one they might think to themselves -- maybe we can take over others now?
Again, these are all big "what ifs?" -- I mean, we could be attacked tomorrow - we each know this all too well.
But I understand where you are coming from and I respect how you feel.

If Georgia becomes a member of NATO then all the members of NATO would have to respond to any attack/invasion. Not just the USA. It's the reason we have NATO.

oh yeah - i agree. we'd be involved in that.
that's the right thing to do - we wouldn't be here if it weren't for the fact that france had our back waaaayyy back when during the revolutionary war - we need to stick together, as democratic nations, to fight those who think they can just take over innocent countries.
