when should I have received a copy of our deed?

We purchased our house almost a year ago... I never received a copy of my deed. Should I have received one?

ETA -- Nassau County

Is a deed the same thing as a title? If so, we got ours about 1 1/2 months after closing.

I don't even know where my deed is. This is one of the things on my "to-do" list that just hasn't gotten done yet.

I don't recall ever getting mine. But even if it was sent to me I may not know it was the deed if it was right in front of me.

I heard you can get a replacement deed from your town office.

You should contact your RE attorney. Our attorney sent us the copy once he received the stamped notarized original.

Wouldn't I have to go to the County to get a copy of the deed, not the town?

I know I can get a replacement, but my issue is whether or not my deed has been recorded yet. While information relating to the sale of our house has been recorded in various places, I cannot search for and locate my deed on the Nassau County web site... I believe I need a copy of it to apply for STAR, which is what made me think to look into this now.

ETA -- I realize it can sometimes take a long time to get the deed recorded, which is why I was curious how long it took others to get theirs. This seems to be an inordinately long time, though.

We got ours fairly soon but, through a small amount of research I have done, it still hasn't been recorded on any public records.

Okay, this could be possible.

Also, in reading up on the web site, it says "if you want to receive a certified copy..." so it's possible that when the deed was filed for recording that a copy wasn't requested for us. I'll check with our attorney, though...

Re: when should I have received a copy of our deed?

Nassau typically has been taking longer to record deeds but still a year is a long time. You shoudl have received a copy of your deed at the closing to use to apply for star. In addition the deed once recorded should have went back to your attorney and then he shoudl have forwarded it to you. They may still have it in their file. Did they provide you with a closing statement because the original might be in there. You do not need a certified copy of your deed to apply for star a copy with a license or gas/electric bill in nassau is usually sufficient.

Ditto, I also remember getting a copy at the closing. I remember that my attorney told me to keep it in a safe place and use if for STAR.

You should have def. had it back by now. First step I would take call your RE Attorney. If he does not have a copy you can go to the Nassau County Clerk to get a copy....Unfortunately Nassau County does not have a website to view a deed or recording information.
