I will try to see how long I can go without needing the epi. Once it gets bad, I have no problems asking for the epi.

ditto...
and to add, my mom went so quickly with me (her first) that not only did her doctor say she should be in the baby making business, but she didn't have time for an EPI...so I'm hoping that will follow for me!!!

I agree with Arielsmom. Every birth is different, and I think it's important to leave your options open. You don't want to feel like you let yourself down if you end up getting an epi. I know people that were convinced they were going to go natural, and ended up with an epi. I also know people who were open to the epi but ended up going natural. I think the best thing to do is see how your labor is progressing and how you feel in the moment. Good luck!

Me-EPI team all the way and I had no choice..things happened to quickly and didnt have time to get one.

Next time around I'd like to try to go naturally. My recovery from my c/s was awful.

This is probably what I would do too if I am lucky enough to deliver vag. I have also read the babies are much more alert and easier to latch on if you want to BF than ones that did have the epi

Re: Going natural vs getting epi

I am going naturally and I really really wanted to do it this way. After a lot of researching and interviewing different practitioners I decided that the best enviroment for me would be to have a homebirth. So, as long as my pregnancy progresses well I will be having a homebirth..........I wil not have the option for pain relief and to me not being tempted by the medication will help me to get through it.

ETA: IF my labors turns out to be long or I need medical intervention I have the option of being transerref to a hospital where my midwives have privledges and I would have access to all medical intervention.

Re: Going natural vs getting epi

I had a homebirth with my last baby. It was only painful for the last hour or so. Before that is was mildly uncomfortable.

The recovery from my homebirth was so much easier! I got up and walked to the bathroom afterwards with no help. The next day I was back to normal. My Mom said that when she saw me after giving birth I looked awesome, as if I hadn't even gone through labor a nd delivery.

Honestly, the pain wasn't half as bad as I had imagined.

I am on the fence about which way to go. On one hand, getting an epidural will ease the pain and I would have a lesser stressed delivery, but going natural means no catheter (my biggest fear) and I have heard that recovery is so much quicker, although I do not know if this is true. Can I hear some of your opinions about this, especially those of you who have been through delivery and have had either type? Thanks!!1

Just from a BTDT mom........
My daughter was drug free although not by choice - she wanted out LOL and labor was fast and furious. My son I had an epi and it was a totally different experience.

I didn't recover any faster without the drugs vs. with - it was the same amount of time BUT I did have a lot more tearing with my first but it could be for 100 different reasons.

Personally and this is just for me, I found the birth of my son with the epi much more calm and controlled. It was a better environment for ME and I didn't think my son was any less alert than my daugher.

I thought you couldn't have a natural birth after a c/s...

I chose epi - and truth be told, I wouldn't have handeled the pain well. The epi actually relaxed me emotionally so that I could enjoy the process instead of dreading the contractions.

(that being said... I ended up with an emergency c/s after 3 hrs of pushing)

I say you go with the flow...as your contractions start, if you feel that you can handle them then go ahead and try to deliver naturally...remember, it is never too late to get epidural...unless you're 10 cm and ready to push.

ETA: My water broke at 1:15am, and the contractions did not start until an hour later, and to be honest they went from a pain scale of 0-10 to a 7 in a matter of minutes! I was in the hospital about an hour and a half later and as soon as I walked in I said "Shoot me UP"!!!!!!!!! And they did and then all was wellChat Icon

this is my plan too! i am going in with the mind set of going natural but if i feel my pelvis starting to split and can not take the pain, then by all means, shoot me up!

Re: Going natural vs getting epi

I have had two natural deliveries, and wouldn't do it any other way.

I loved the fact that I was completely aware of the entire birthing process, and that after I delivered, I was alert and feeling relatively good. Alot of my friends who have had epidurals have told me of how they are sort of out of it after, and really tired.

Yes, going natural is painful, but as women our bodies are built to do it. After your baby is born, you instantly forget the pain. Well, I did anyways.

Re: Going natural vs getting epi

Bottom line is that each and every person is different. To compare one woman against another (or even one woman against herself from pregnancy to pregnancy) is like apples to oranges. anything can happen at any time.

For example, I would love to be able to deliver vaginally and I am glad that I will be able to at least give it a shot since she is no longer breech, but the bottom line is that I have SEVERE scar tissue on my cervix (which kept me from getting PG naturally in the first place and may not dilate at all and therefore the choice will be made for me again. I sure as heck ain't fighting it. It is what it is.

i went into my delivery open-minded. my labor ended up progressing pretty quickly, so by the time the pain was unbearable and i asked for the epi i was already 8cm dilated.

getting the epi was the best decision for me. i got to relax and feel the excitement of the upcoming birth, totally pain-free. i barely felt the catheter going in.

i had a terrific recovery and left the hospital within 24 hours of giving birth.

the above quote wasn't true for me. ds latched on immediately within 10 minutes of being born, and he was as alert as he could be.

Re: Going natural vs getting epi

I guess in a way I had both last delivery. I got an epi pretty soon after they administered pictocin( I was induced since the baby's heart rate had slowed and I just wanted her out and safe). But they turned it off an hour and half before I delivered her since I wasn't pushing correctly and couldn't feel enough to push right.

So the epi wore off about a half hour before I started pushing. The pain was very intense and awful but I think I could handle it again. I actually thought the pain AFTER birth was worse- birthing the placenta, massaging my uterus and the subsequent contractions actually were worse than giving birth to me. But then I got to have pain meds and all was fine. So I am going to try natural and see how it goes.

oh, one more epi-con:

epi-administration gone wrong=spinal headache! If the anaesthesiologist accidentally nicks your dura while giving an epi, you may begin to leak spinal fluid... Within a day or so, you'll get a RAGING headache (migrane-quality) that only goes away if you are laying horizontal... the headache can last a couple weeks, or until your dura heals..... this means you will have to stay horizontal instead of taking care of baby!

Frankly, the catheter or IV are not worries to me at all... but the small risk of spinal headache definitely is! That would incapacitate me. This will be my motivation to try to stay drug-free

I'm terrified of this and it is one of the big reasons I'd really like to try and go natural. Like a pp said I don't plan on being a marytr though. If the pain gets to be too much then I'm getting the epidural!

Awesome-I also read that in a book that was totally FOR drug free birth and you know anyone can find any study to back up their own theories. I would like to try but if at any time it gets too painful or stressful I am all about the epi-I have a pretty good pain tolerance,,so we'll see. This could all be moot anyway because i may need a C-section as I am having twins

I had epis both times and had quick and easy births and recovery was a breeze. All I needed was some advil for the dull pain....never even filled the vicodin script they gave me

Re: Going natural vs getting epi

My intentions going in is for a completely natural birth. Just my choice based on a lot of research and personal feelings. I have spoken to many, many women who have done it natural including my mother for both children, it is possible, so hopefully everything will go according to plan :)
