This is why I would never judge people who take money out of their retirement fund ( referring to the other thread ).

The threat of losing your home - is probably one of the worst feelings in the world ESPECIALLY if you have a family depending on you.

Re: Did anyone read this story:

very sad- but it sounds like there is more to the story

she was hiding it from her husband- why?

I would bet that is more the reason then the actual foreclosure

taking the money to save your house- is different then taking it for a party or a vacation

I thought the same thing.

She paid all the bills and her husband had no idea they were in foreclosure.

Her poor husband.

Of course. But to me, it sounds like everyone just assumes people who run into financial trouble are just irresponsible. Not just on this site, but in general - and it just adds to the stigma that makes it harder for these people to seek out help.

Her poor husband.

I bet she was using the money on something else- and having to face her husband was worse then anything else

I can only imagine-

it takes a LONG time to have the house go in auction- it can take up to 2 years

You never know what was going on. I have/had a very very dear friend (more like a sister then anything else) who lost her condo and her car. To this day, nobody knows why. She has a great job, makes good money and on the outside seems very stable, happy, socialble, etc... for whatever reason she stopped paying her mortgage and then started to ignore the foreclosure notices, only to finally come home one day to a notice on her door that the condo had been sold at auction. She will tell you up and down to this day that she doesn't know why she did it.

The above story, I read earlier today, it's very sad.

I was just going to ask that because I don't think if you kill yourself you can collect on it.

I always understood that you couldn't.

What I couldn't get over in the article, is how people were there waiting to bid on the house when her body was still INSIDE! You would think the "crime scene" tape would scare some people off. At least of a day or two. Damn!

I find it sad that she did try to file bankrupcy and they dismissed her claim 3 times. If the financial situation was that bad, why couldn't she do it? There is either way more to the story or this woman got screwed when she was looking desperately for helpChat Icon

What happened to her is tragic.
But with respect to the other thread (a separate issue), I think that unless you are truly impoverished (& there are many responsible, hardworking people who are), there is no excuse for living even a bit above your means and then being surprised/upset when the bills have to be paid. It may sound harsh, but if you can't pay your mortgage, you should not have a collection of designer goods/lifestyle and be paying toward keeping up an "appearance" that will need to be subsodized--by anyone. I feel like lately, everyone I see has the "right" cars, bags, and is drinking/eating out lots. And that's great for them--live it up....untill I read about how many people are spending $$$ that they do not have, and I know that statistically a good portion of those keeping up appearances are doing so at the expense of foreclosure risks, their kids' college accounts, and their retirement $$$. Someone will have to bail them out-whether it's the government (us), the taxpayers (us), or their kids (our future),a ndd it's just selfish. Truly poor people who have to stretch to cover basic needs bviously can't be expected to live at or below their means, but there's no excuse for the rest of us.

ITA!! Side Note: I have also heard lately people claiming that things are stolen or are missing just so they can get the insurance money for it.Chat Icon That is why our rates keep going up.

I assumed that they didn't know her body was in there when they got there. The article I read said she committed suicide about 30 minutes before it was scheduled for auction.

I feel awful for her and her family. No matter what else was going on, she felt suicide was the only way out.

And no, usually insurance policies cannot be collected for suicide. What a tragic story.

If you commit suicide can you still get claim your life insurance policy?

Yes. Most insurance companies require you to be covered for two years at least.

If you commit suicide after that - the family can collect. Chat Icon

This is such a tragic story.

I can speak from personal experience on this matter as the same scenario happened with my parents (except that my mom did not commit suicide, but she did run away for a while and we had no idea where she was.)

its not easy on both parties. i really feel for this family.
