Can you tell me about Lindenhurst?

I see there are a lot of affordable homes there. How is the area? Are there good parts/bad parts? School district? any info is appreciated.

Lindenhurst is a very nice area. I would definitely stay with Lindenhurst schools too. some houses are Copaige schools and I don't believe that SD is as great.

South Lindenhurst near the water is VERY nice!

I have a friend that lives near the water and her kids go to Lindenhurst schools. She is very happy there.

I live in N. Lindy and love it. We don't have children yet, so I can't comment on the schools either, but we are in the Lindenhurst school district.

The properties in my area are a little smaller than I'm used to, but my neighbors are all really nice & friendly. Our area was originally all small ranches & split levels, but many of the homes have been renovated and/or expanded through the years, so the neighborhood has been "kept up." I've driven past some areas up here that look a little less well maintained, but I haven't been here long enough to really make a sweeping statement about which areas are good & bad to live in. If you have a particular place in mind, I'd recommend just driving around to get a feel for it. I don't think that there are any really "bad" areas in town though...hth! Happy house hunting! I live here too! I love it, but i have to move. i am moving because i need to move further west to be closer to family and our jobs! I have two little girls who aren't in the school district yet, but went to the BEST EVER nursery school... Grace Nursery (on wellwood at ht Grace United Methodist Church). Nothing compares.

The school districts are good, i used to live closer to the water and the family next to me LOVED the schools that their children were going to.

they have great festivals and things here. I am in walking distance to the RR which has come in handy on numerous occasions! Supermarkets... everyone that you want in driving distance (this is what i will miss the most!).

the best part of lindenhurst is that it was established back in the 1800s so you have really old homes mixed with brand new ones and the history that goes along with this town is really something.

Happy house hunting! FM for more info...

PS - my house is on the market if you want to look at it...

ETA:My neighbor now (west gates elementary school) has a slightly autistic child and she said that the program that is at our school is phenomenal.

Re: Can you tell me about Lindenhurst?

Does anyone else have any insight?

I asked my mother last night what she though of Lindenhurst, and she seemed to think it was not the greatest place for us to live. She said the schools are not so great and the high school is too big...

I already know the HS there is large, but is it really not a good school? I think it is all relative, I know i cannot afford to live in areas that she considers to be the best or better school districts, so i dont know how good her opinion is...I have driven through the area several times and it seems nice to me

anyone else have anything to say about Lindy? i would love to hear positives and ANY negatives you could think of. Thanks!

Re: Can you tell me about Lindenhurst?

my husband and i were looking there last year before the market really dropped. it was the only area that was in our price range. i have to say i wasn't a huge fan. there was just something about it i didn't like. i couldn't put my finger on it, but i just didn't have the "feeling" about the neighborhood that i wanted to have. we were told the schoo ldistrict was "fine" but the realtor didn't really have much information to be honest.

we ended up buying in north shore suffolk this year and got an amazing house in a better area for the same price as we would have paid in lindy last year.

Re: Can you tell me about Lindenhurst?

I live in Lindenhurst, and grew up there.

School district is normal. Sure it isn't one of the best on the island, but I'd say it's a little higher than middle of the road. I don't think the high school is too large - my neice's class (3 years ago) was about 600 kids. If you're concerned about it there are plenty of places on the web to compare class size, standardized test results, etc.

I like it because it's basically as far west you can go without hitting nassau (higher taxes!). Also, you're close to Babylon, with the express train to the city.

As a previous poster said above, being on the south shore is nice, but I wouldn't purchase a house south of Montauk Hwy. I know of plenty of people that have had 2 feet of water on their main level due to flooding issues.

Good luck.
