DS has hypospadia - need advice

His pediatrician says it is not a severe case at all and would be considered more cosmetic than medically necessary. He says we should wait until he is 2 to see if he has problems potty training before considering a Ped. Urologist and/or surgery.

My OB (who was the first to diagnose the hypospadia immediately after my c-section) disagrees with the ped and said to take Ryan to a Ped. Urologist now.

I am leaning towards to opinion of my OB. Thinking of putting Ryan under any surgery at the age of 2 versus infant just doesn't sit well with me.

Does anyone have any experience with either a Hypospadia? And just out of curiosity, do you think I should take him to the urologist or wait until he is older?

Honestly, I would take him to the pediatric urologist now---they are the experts on the subject and will tell you if it should be done now, later or not at all. My DS has a different urologic problem that requires surgery, my ped told me when he thought they would do the surgery and it wasn't the same time as when the urologist said it was recommended---so the peds don't always know.....it can't hurt to get the urologist opinion.

Re: DS has hypospadia - need advice

Hi Jess,

DS had hypospadia and everyone including the ped at the hospital (not mine) told me to go tot he urologist and get it taken care of. I went to Dr. Palmer, he was the best. He had the surgery in March and is perfect now. They will tell you if you should have the surgery or not but it dosent hurt to go. DS also had a mild case and still needed the surgery. If you have any questions or concerns please FM me. I was a wreck and then he had the surgery and he came through with flying colors. They like to do the surgery between 6 months and 18 months.

I completely agree...the expert will have a better handle on the situation and the timeline. They will be able to give you the best options.

I would take him and see what the ped urologist says. I took my son to see Drs. Palmer and Brock (for a different issue) in Lake Success and loved them .

I would take him now. We have a different issue with my son and we only noriced it when we started potty training. Now he will need surgery next week at almost 3 years old and I wish it was something we could have done earlier, but we would have never seen this with out potty training.

I would go and let the specialist advise you on what to do.

Good luck!!!

Re: DS has hypospadia - need advice

Hi!
DS was born with hypospadiues and we took him to the urologist right away. The dr my pedatrician recommended was out of stony brook and he said it was also cosmetic (mostly) but would prefer to do the surgery at 6 months old rather than waiting until he was older. So at 6 month DS had the surgery (which is on an out patient basis), his Dr also did the circumsision at the time too. In the end, DS recovered quickly, and no problems since! FM me if you would like anymore info!

I actually know 2 babies who just had the surgery for this...one was 1 year old and one 1 8 months. I would do it sooner rather than later - def bring him to a per urologist.
IF you are in SUffolk, Dr. Wasnick is AMAZING. He actually just did my son's circumcision (as well as the 2 surgeries I just posted about)
