Man charged with injecting woman with heroin
A Westbury man was arrested after he sold a woman heroin and then injected her with the drug in the bathroom of a Dunkin' Donuts, Nassau police said.
The arrest came after the 21-year-old woman was found slumped over next to the Hicksville eatery, police said. She was in stable condition Tuesday at an East Meadow hospital, where she was being treated for a heroin overdose, police said.
Joseph G. Sorrentino, 34, of 933 Bowling Green Dr., was charged with criminal sale of a controlled substance and criminal injection of a narcotic drug, police said.
Around 9:45 p.m. Monday, a Second Precinct police sergeant on patrol found the woman in the lot of the Dunkin' Donuts at 24 Newbridge Rd., police said.
"The victim stumbled out of the store and collapsed near a side entrance," said Nassau Police Det. Lt. John May of the Second Squad. "She had difficulty breathing."
The eatery is across the road from the Hicksville Long Island Rail Road station.
The woman, who was taken to Nassau University Medical Center, will not face criminal charges, said Officer John Mullaney, a Nassau police spokesman.
The woman, whose name police are withholding from the public, asked Sorrentino to help get the heroin into her bloodstream, May said.
"She asked him for heroin and then asked for his assistance to inject the heroin," May said.
The woman collapsed shortly after the injection in her arm, May said.
Witness Joe Murtagh, who was eating pizza next to the Dunkin' Donuts Monday night, said he saw the commotion triggered by the woman's discovery.
"There were so many cops around her taking care of her," said Murtagh, 66, of Hicksville. "She was laying down on the ground."
A police investigation led to Sorrentino, who had allegedly sold the woman a bag of heroin and then went with her inside the bathroom, where he injected the heroin into her arm using a hypodermic needle, police said. They left the bathroom and Sorrentino left the scene, but he was arrested Tuesday at 12:30 a.m. in the vicinity of the Dunkin' Donuts, police said.
He was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday morning at First District Court in Hempstead.
For a previous case, court records show, Sorrentino is scheduled to appear next week in a Suffolk criminal court on two misdemeanor charges filed June 3 that allege he unlawfully possessed drugs and a "hypodermic instrument."
Sorrentino's arrest comes at a time when law enforcement officials say they are seeing an increase in heroin use among Nassau's teenagers.
Last month, Natalie Ciappa, 18, of Massapequa, was found dead in a friend's recreation room in Seaford in a heroin-related death, police said.
Police charged the host of the party, Seewoo Sung, with tampering with evidence, among other charges, and Ciappa's ex-boyfriend Philip Ordaya was arrested in connection with a heroin ring operating out of the Hempstead bus terminal.
The ring was a central supply line feeding the drug to middle-class teenagers on Long Island's South Shore, Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice has said.

can someone explain to me WHY this woman is not being charged with possession or something - isn't she the one who bought it????

She bought it and begged him to inject it but she is not being charged? I agree he needs to be charged - the article clearly states this is not his first rodeo, but she needs to have some accountability too.
