Sorry to do this...again...but I have 2 daycare questions

I am so sorry...this is getting old and even I am tired of it all. I am so stressed over the whole daycare situation that I even broke out with a cold sore. Chat Icon

I have a few questions and need some advice, suggestions, opinions if you all could help...

The only paperwork I have says that the $600 deposit I put down in the beginning is non-refundable and is used to cover the last two weeks.

1. Typically, is there a notice period required when you are pulling your child out of daycare? Can I just tell them x date will be Lucas' last day?

2. I pay by the month and considering that my deposit covers the last two weeks and we pay each month in the beginning....when I pay my bill for the last month should I just pay the amount minus the deposit?

Interviewing new daycare centers

If you were in my place, how would you approach the topic of why you are looking at a new daycare center? Would you tell them about the situation you just left or leave it alone? I'd prefer not to bad mouth anyone since this isn't about the current center itself but rather some of the people and their behavior. I don't want this to be a strike against us since we didn't do anything wrong.

Thanks! Chat Icon

I haven't had to deal with daycares yet but I think I would just leave the whole situation alone. If they ask I would just say for personal reasons. Then while interviewing I would ask how handle displining the children when an incident like biting and hitting happens. I actually asked this question while looking at one a few months ago.

Sorry that you have to go through this all Chat Icon

Sorry, I didn't see this when I asked you about daycare in Theresa's post.

As far as interviewing daycares, I don't think there is any harm in explaining that there was a break in trust with your previous place (which you don't need to name). It's not like you are on to your fifth daycare in a year and are one of "those moms" who always has a problem - it's just that it is important to you to trust your daycare provider - and of course it should be. Obviously, this is just my opinion - but if asked why you're leaving the other place - I would be fairly honest (no need to go through every detail). It will only let your new potential place know where you stand and what's important to you. Chat Icon

Do you have a contract? We did with ours. We gave them the notice speciafied in our contract. They seemed surprised that we actually gave them that much notice. I think they can be sometimes flexible but honestly the contract is "it" if they want to give you a hard time.

We wrote them a later stating when the last day would be. Usually a contact would state that you have to do it in writting.

2. I pay by the month and considering that my deposit covers the last two weeks and we pay each month in the beginning....when I pay my bill for the last month should I just pay the amount minus the deposit?

I would. I would also specify that in the letter.

No need to go into lengthy explanations. You can looking for a new daycare, not trying to justify what happened. KWIM! If asked, I would just say that the daycare was not a good match for you and your family.

Is it bad that I say I don't know if we have a contract? I don't have a copy of one and it was so long ago I don't remember. Should I ask?

How much notice did your contract state?

I would go into the new daycare situation with a fresh start and not telling them...except if they outright ask, I would reply "it didnt work out there"

Re: Sorry to do this...again...but I have 2 daycare questions

I just switched day cares for my son. I had to give 4 weeks notice in order to get the security deposit back. I had to fill out a sheet notifying them of the date, and have it signed by the lead teacher.

This is very helpful. I'm wondering since ours in non-refundable the notice time has to be shorter...or so I hope. But unless we find a place this week we'd have 4 weeks anyway so that would cover us if we gave notice sometime soon...I want to try to get this resolved before next month if at all possible.

I think it said 30 days. We gave them 3.5 weeks. They did not say anything or gave us any problems. But we did not have a deposit anyway. They were actually surprised we gave them that much notice.

Re: Sorry to do this...again...but I have 2 daycare questions

I had to take DD out of daycare because we moved. We had to give 4 weeks notice, so I gave them a letter with exactly when her last day would be and also specified that I would only be paying x that month and my deposit should be used to cover the rest.

Good luck! Chat Icon
