paying sister to watch baby

my sister is coming home from CA (yay!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon ) and will be watching Chat Icon when i go back to work in december.

because of DH's rotating schedule she will work 3 days a week for 4 weeks straight and 4 days a week for 2 weeks straight (he works in 6-week cycles).

she is 25, will be living with my parents, and will be taking a couple of classes online. i am not sure yet if she will get a part time job for nights and weekends.

i have NO idea what we should pay her. i want to pay her per day since she will be working different hours/days depending on DH's schedule, and mine always stays the same.

i figure that if i was going to put the baby in day care i would be paying approximately $300 a week, so i am looking to save a little (her bills total $600 a month so i definitely want to cover that, but she doesn't seem too concerned with making a lot extra).

i was thinking $60/day - that way she would either make $180 or $240 a week, and would average about $780 a month.

does this sound fair to you? would $70/day be more fair? please be honest!! thanks for reading - sorry this was so long!!

it would probably be from 7 or 7:30 to 4:15, 4:30 every day, so about 9 hours. i have to be at work at 8:15, so i would want her there before i left to give me time to get ready.

JMO: but for a 9 hr day it sounds a bit low.
We pay our nanny $10 and hour - but she cooks to. I think 8 to 9 per hour sounds fair to me.

My sister will also be taking care of our baby. We're going to pay her 250 per week, but she'll work 5 days and her hours will be quite a bit shorter than your sister's.

Something to consider is the quality of and one-to-one, devoted care your little one will receive versus day care. I know I would be willing to pay a little more for that alone. Also, most of my friends here on the Island pay their full-time babysitters no less than $10/ hour - and these are teachers, nurses, and not super high-earners.

I agree, I think for that amount of time and for one-on-one care it's a bit low.

Re: paying sister to watch baby

I watched my friend's baby a couple of years ago. 8-4 and she paid me $75/day. I know it gets tricky with personal relationships but IMHO it's a long day and a lot of work and $60 just doesn't seem like enough.

Ditto. My MIL will be babysitting and we're paying her $50/day for 5day at $250/week.

JMO: I think because she's family you're entitled a break. I would even ask her if $50 is ok and if she is looking for more then you can say $60.
