I am sort of happy about gas prices going up

You know how they say everything has a silver lining... well although I don't like paying the prices, I think that FINALLY people are opening their eyes and starting to realize that we need to reduce energy consumption and stop our use of fossil fuels. It may have taken a hit to the pocketbook for this to happen, but the environmental impact is going to be very positive. People are trading thier SUV's in for more fuel efficient cars, people are driving less, people are lowering their heat.
My hope is that now much more time and money will be put into finding alternative energy sources, and that alternative energy will become more affordable (like solar panels).

So even though it sucks to be paying $4+ a gallon to fill our tanks, there is something good coming of it.

You are right.
I think people are starting to see that unless they have a real NEED for a truck or SUV that the smarter option is to get a more fuel efficient vehicle.
I hope that the days of buying SUVS as status symbols or for the "looks" of them are going to come to an end.

It sometimes takes getting hit in the pocketbook to make a change that benefits not just you- but the environmnet as well.

I'm sorry but I can't agree with this. You should never be happy about gas prices going up.

While this is great that the consumer is starting to realize the issues with gas consumption, the person that operates a business really has no choice in the matter and is getting screwed.

It's not like the home contractor is going to trade in his work truck for a Prius. He is instead going to pass the cost of gasoline onto the customer.

Im not sure I see it that way. Great thought but... When Im cold I put the heat on. My last oil bill was 749.00 Chat Icon We drive the same amount of time, to work and for pleasure. We both have cars. My dh's car takes premium gas. My car that use to be 997 to fill is now 31.00. I can't afford to buy a new car but car I love is not a hybrid.

I guess im a horrible person.

I wish I could say I was happy.

I think for a lot of people it won't make a difference in their life. They have money and will always have money. The people that are really hurt by this are the working class and small business owners.

I totally agree- and the small business owners will have to raise prices and lay off workers

(as well are large business)

I have no plans to trade in my SUV for anything other then another SUV

Re: I am sort of happy about gas prices going up

While I agree in "theory" with what you said, it's not just the consumers' fault.

I would also blame a lot of other "people" who have made this cycle we can't get out of.

- why aren't there more cars on the market with fuel alternative and at a cheaper price?
- Why aren't the automakers changing the technology of their cars?
- Except for LIRR, why aren't there better way of traveling within LI? Did anyone ever look at how bad the bus services are in term of way of transportation. I did.

Even if I wanted to "change" today, I could not afford the hybric cars, it would take me hours to go to any locations with the bus ( go to a bus stop, waiting for the bus, change multiple buses).

Now, I used to live in the City. The bus transportation and subway made it possible to be car free. But that's not the reality on LI.

ETA: In the end, I am not consuming. Great, right?! You see, now I will be "stuck" at home because I don't want to spend so much money on gas. So while I am "saving" money by not travelling that much anymore it also means I will not go out shopping and spend money for the economy. So we all losing. I think the average person is directly impacted by this. We can't afford to go out and enjoy life either.

Re: I am sort of happy about gas prices going up

while i'm aghast at the cost of gasoline and am not happy about it at all, I do agree that I think in some respect it is raising awareness. However, being a bit more "green" (i hate this new buzzword) requires a lot more than a slight awareness because honestly, its a pain in the ***.

Whether its getting dirty looks for holding up a grocery line while I pack my giant cloth bags, having fewer options for cheap/good mileage cars (hi yaris!), or having to live in a certain neighborhood, its all stuff that is decided upon/done based on living a certain lifestyle.

To the other poster - yea LI is kinda craptastic in terms of good public transport, but that there are definitely neighborhoods you can live in where everything is walkable. you just gotta give up one thing to get another.

I wouldn't mind it if it didn't coincide with oil companies making RECORD profits.

something in THAT equation isn't right.

but we are still paying and have always paid FAR FAR less than what the average Joe in europe pays for gas. they'd STILL love to pay our gas prices.

that's why they drive smart cas, Vespas, walk a lot and ride bikes.

I don't forsee us (dh and I) to be excessively dependant on a car. I don't forsee us everr (again) owning an SUV, especially one that isn't a hybrid.

people will get used to the rise in price eventually, and stop caring. it's too difficult, too time consiming, and could potentially cause one to change the way they live in some way..God Forbid that.

Exactly. I was telling DH last night that when gas was $2 and change, everyone said they'd change their ways when it hit $3. They didn't. Again, everyone said if gas hit $4 they'd change their ways. We're not going to. A change in government is the ONLY thing that's going to help this problem, and I don't mean putting a ridiculous freeze on gas taxes.

Think about it. With gas over 44 now, we'll all be ecstatic over gas at $3.57 when they lower the prices. It's just a game to gradually raise the price of gas and have the people be ok with it. We'll go through the same thing in another year or two when they take it over $5.

I hope people will make changes. We need to reduce our dependency on oil!

I find random excuses to work from home because the gas and tolls are killing me. I wish I had the option of taking public transportation to work, but it's just not practical.

I agree too- I think that most people are counting on others to make changes so that they can continue to live the way they are. But this goes way beyond gas- I feel like I still see so much waste in general.

Our culture is centered around consumption.

it's hard sometimes to get away from it. I don't even mean materialistic big things (though that is certainly part of it) but even little things. I have a major storage problem so I have really started questioning buying anything I would have just bought in a heartbeat before.

Re: I am sort of happy about gas prices going up

In the 70's, there was the gas crisis, when prices were through the roof, and there were rations at the pumps, and people waited hours in line for gas. There was a slight blip in cars to be more efficient (which is primarily why Japanese cars took off in the US), but it was temporary, and as soon as the crisis was over, cars started getting bigger and less efficient again. Humans are very good at forgetting the past.... Chat Icon

i agree with you i have def been rethinking things i buy for our apt and all the little knicknacks sp? we have i am already trying to think of ways to tell certain people to stop buying us crap for christmas, while i appreciate the thought its just junk sitting on a shelf or in a drawer (and i really am talking about junk) and also trying to think of alternative gifts to give other people

I totally agree with this. There is no reason why consumers should be raked across the coals while the execs at Exxon/Mobil are laughing their way to the bank, its absolutely ridiculous.

I am just saying I think that some people are starting to realize we can't be so dependent on oil. Even if this trend reverses - like it did in the 70's- it won't last for long, because the truth is there is a finite amount of oil in this world and we have used most of it up. As it begins to become more and more scarce, the prices will go up and up. I am hoping by then, there will be choices, and that what is happening today will fuel (excuse the pun) the demand for these alternatives.

what about the fact that gas is about $1.50 cheaper across the northern boarder.

If we all think about it, I think we can figure out what cheney's top secret energy policy was.........

I have seriously started thinking about public transportation options to get me to and from work. I'm also thinking about buying a scooter. On the weekends we rarely take our car anywhere - only if we're going someplace far.

Re: I am sort of happy about gas prices going up

you know what's super annoying is that gas is in everything- used to make plastic, used to make electricity, etc etc... and it is a shame that in terms of electricity- there is a solution- but in this country no one wants it- and that's nuclear. 75% of France's electricity comes from nuclear power plants- they are managed wise and well. It's clean and they recycle the waste. A family of 4 using electricity for 20 years would only create waste the size of a cigarette lighter.

that's a non-starter of an issue in many areas, including LI. you simply can't build a safe plant here... too densely populated...

there are other alternative energy sources, and people wierdly argue against them.... solar, wind....

when it comes down to it, people are so resistant to change that we will hasten our own demise... we only take action once it's too late. sad fact of human nature

ITA. I lived in Wading River when they tried to build the Shoreham power plant. It was a constant battle to get that going, and then it finally got squashed. It will be many years before people don't automatically think of Chernobyl and Three Mile Island whenever someone says "Nuclear" (or when some say "Nucular"...)

don't even get me started about the shot-down wind mills off Gilgo- sooo stupid.
you know Long Island has the 4th largest electricity rates in the nation?

I just don't know why it can be done in populated areas in France since the 70s without incident- but can't be done here- it's ridiculous.

for the same reason our country stubbornly resists a national health plan.... for that matter, for the same reason we refused the metric system.

we're wasting tons of $$ due to our resistance to change... it WILL be this country's downfall.......
