Nanny or Daycare...HMmmmmmm

I want to start putting DS in daycare in the next couple of months or so. While my MIL and my mom have taken care of him since he ws 5 months I believe he will gain better social skills and be engaged a bit more if he is around other children.

However, I dont know if a nanny or daycare is a better choice. I am currently working in NY and live in PA and wont get home until 7pm and that is the latest he can stay at daycare. I fear that i wont be able to get home in time to pick him up at 7pm on the dot. If i had a nanny i probably wouldnt have to worry about this right?

Just to Add the nanny's hours would be like, 6am-7:30pm. Are there even nanny's that will work that long?

If any of you ladies have a nanny and work long hours please share your experiences.

Since you said your reason for putting him in daycare would be to gain better social skills, a Nanny would defeat the purpose of that since it's one on one care.

I disagree. I think it depends on what you would allow your nanny to do with your DC.

Those are long days, can she bring him to activities?

I watch a boy 5 days a week, we just got back from a bounce house where he saw tons of kids.

Yesterday, we spent the morning at the park with other kids.

Tomorrow, we go to our normal kid's museum and toddler class.

I think a nanny works out great if you are okay with her driving your kid around.Chat Icon

Me 3. Plus, I am a little biased. I worked in day care for a number of years. I KNOW there are people in the child care business who should not be. My fear with a nanny is that no one else is around to see what is going on. In a day care setting at least you know there are a lot of people around to monitor what is going on. Unless I knew there person or got numerous recommendations I would not feel comfortable with a nanny. But that is just me. In addition, when you have a nanny you can sometimes get stuck. What happens if they are sick or something suddenly comes up, then you have to try and find other care for your child. This happened to my BIL and SIL on a few occassions.

I'm going through this too. Mynanny just quit taking care of my 2 year old. I decided to put her into daycare because I think its a better place for her to develop. She'll get discipline, social skills and a :school setting which I think will benefit her at this age.

But the MIL or Mother can do those things also I would think (if they drive, etc.) without the need for hiring a nanny.

How about splitting the day...lets say have him in a daycare from 7-12 or 1pm and then have a nanny come and pick him up and stay with him until you get home...that way he gets the best of both worlds.

I'm planning on doing this once DS starts to walk...I'm hoping by October I'll have him in daycare a couple of days a week from 8-1pm and then have my SIL pick him up and watch him until we get home.

Re: Nanny or Daycare...HMmmmmmm

I actually just let my nanny go and I enrolled him FT in Daycare. Daycare def more stimulating then my Nanny. In the past 2 mths since I enrolled in in Daycare he has picked up sign language (was going 2x's per week and with Nanny 3x's). They have music time, reading time, they teach him things in english, italian and in sign language. They have so many outdoor activites. I felt with my nanny he was very limited and now that he is 18mths he needs more activities and socalizing.

My nanny would work from 7:30-untill me or DH came home. The latest she had to stay was 6pm. Daycare is from 8am-6pm but DH normally picks him up early (4/5pm).

I think it also depends on where you live and how many other kids are around in the neighborhood. if I was still living in the city, I would have gotten a nanny. Since I now live in the burbs and pretty much do not know anyone out here, I went the daycare route. I didn't want DD in the house all day with just one person stimulating her. So far it's working out very well.

Re: Nanny or Daycare...HMmmmmmm

I vote day care. I was scared of it at first, but ow that he is there, and I see the interaction with the other children, it is just so wonderful.

As far as the time thing goes, can your mom pick him up at 5 maybe, and keep him til you get home? She wont be watching him FULL time anymore, but this will allow her some time with him at least, and you peace of mind, and not feeling stressed and rushed ot get to him?

I wish my mom or MIL could pick him up but they dont live in PA. Dh has been bringing him every day since he was 5 months to Long Island just so our parents can babysit him. Then DH would drive back to the city to go to work. It has been so stressful. I think its time for him to go in daycare.
