go to the circus?
I would think for the same reason people go to the movies, the zoo, bowling, the museums, etc..... for entertainment.

Re: spinoff to marching of elephants.... Why would anyone
I think Jess is getting at the allegations of animal abuse surrounding the circus.
I have to say, I'm not normally a boycott sort of person... but I will never go to the circus again after most of what I've learned about the treatment of the animals. I went as a child, but I haven't gone in years (and won't).
I say do some research and make your own decisions, though. I've made mine, but people are free to make their own decisions about it. This is something I feel strongly about for me, but I don't place judgment on those who make a different, informed decision. I personally won't go, but you won't find me protesting it either.

BTW - Jess, correct me if I'm wrong. I didn't mean to put words into your mouth. It's just the first thing I think of when I think of the circus...

Re: spinoff to marching of elephants.... Why would anyone
Perhaps rather than being passive aggressive about it and asking why someone would go to the circus, Jess could provide some education in the form of internet links, studies, or documentaries that would explain her position.
ETA: I just feel the "tone" of the OP could be misconstrued- which often happens with her posts. Some people honestly don't know about the tx of circus animals.

Excellent point. I've "known" Jes long enough to know what she's passionate about so I knew exactly where her question is coming from.

here's one prominent site known about educating animal abuse in circuses:
Circuses.com
Mercy for animals
ASPCA Cruelty Circuses

Re: spinoff to marching of elephants.... Why would anyone
nevermind, i obviously cant ask a question without being accused of being passive agressive.
i was simply asking because yes, i boycott it due to animal abuse, but i am also scared of clowns......
therefore, i have never been so i was asking why people go there as for i dont really know what goes on there

Aw man, I guess my mind-reading capabilities aren't working today. Shoot..... gotta get them fixed.
Here's a PSA to avoid future conflict: SAY what you MEAN, MEAN what you SAY..... it's a great way to avoid unnecessary drama

people go because it's entertainment. Clowns are funny, acrobats are amazing, animals do great tricks. If you don't like that sort of thing, don't go.

Never liked the circus so I don't go, but once my son reaches a certain age, i will definitely take him...for entertainment purposes.

Re: spinoff to marching of elephants.... Why would anyone
I have to say, though, that when the question is presented that way, people will take offense.
I know many families that love taking their kids to the circus - they went when they were little, and truthfully, most kids adore circuses and seeing the animals.
They don't think that the animals were starved, beaten, and intimidated. they just see elephants walking and lions jumping thru hoops, etc...
I'm a vegan, but I would never present a question like, "Why would ANYONE eat meat..." or "Why would anyone wear fur..." KWIM?
Imagine if someone posted something like, "Why would ANYONE tattoo their body?
I know people who would never get a tattoo, they don't like them, etc - but if they wanted to know why someone else does it, if they presented the question that way, they aren't really welcoming an answer..... it just comes across as a little attacking, whether you mean it to be or not....

Re: spinoff to marching of elephants.... Why would anyone
For some people, the only time they see animals (lions, tigers, bears, elephants, horses, zebras, etc) is at a circus (not everyone goes to zoos). For most people, clowns are funny. I am always amazed by acrobats. Tightrope walkers, trapeze artists, riding bikes on tightropes, balancing acts. There's also the vibe you get from being in a crowd.
As far as the cruelty to animals, I can only go by what I read, and according to the Ringling Brother's website, it doesn't seem that bad:

OK Jess- I'll bite.... considering you feel so misunderstood in this thread, I feel compelled to ask..... WHY didn't you ASK for that kind of information. For example:
Title: Why would anyone go to the circus?
Body: I am totally creeped out by clowns and I am horrifed at the treatment of the circus animals. So what other reasons are there to go?
My point is this: you are KNOWN for your animal cruelty threads- and it was pretty obvious to a number of people that this was likely what your thread was about.
