I am not always sure if this always works though. I filed a complaint once with BTJ's jungle in West Islip. It was the middle of summer, no air conditioning, not even a fan blowing on their cages. A bunch of puppies shoved into 1 cage in the sweltering heat.
I called the ASPCA who directed me to the Suffolk County SPCA - the woman on the phone could care less and just took the info down. I went back a week later and still , nothing had been done. You can't even put a fan on the dogs cages!!!!! So I called the SPCA back and had to leave a message, no one ever got back to me.
So - IMO - getting the dog out of the situation is your best bet. There is nothing wrong with reaching out to the media but I am not sure if it always works.
I'm truly shocked, the SPCA is pretty good with follow up.
I know the place you're talking about, it was a rat hole. Thankfully it's gone, but it's sad that it burned down. I don't even like to think about the poor animals that were trapped in there.

I agree its a terrible story - and there is no right answer.
Personally - I would NEVER buy him. Yes its sad... but its just as sad for every dog sitting in a shelter with the same story - and perhaps worse - when their owners dumped them off because their medical bills got too high because they came from mills. .

It is even worse, IMO. The area is smaller and they cram more animals in there. DH went there with a friend who was building a pond. They were selling some kind of "-poo" mix dog for $2200. When DH approached and asked if they came from a rep breeder the guy said, "They come from right here on LI. I know the breeder myself. They are very reputable and breed blah, blah, blah...." They guy listed 10 different breeds at least. DH was like, Oh yeah that's reputable. The guy got pi$$ed at DH & started yelling at him in the middle of the store. It was a scene.

to heck with what it is the "right" thing to do- give Lenny a good home and let yourself love him.
Go buy him, bring him home and give him love.
But, write a letter to every network, craigs list etc- exposing the store and how awful they are.
Don't let anyone tell you that you are doing the wrong thing-

Go rescue him and keep him alive, if u feel u cant handle him in your apt, sell him for 1/2 price to a friend or friend of a friend..... etc word of mouth..... u'll be out $400 or so, but u'll save his life... i dont think u'll be able to every get over this if u leave him there to get sick etc.....

This is great news. I am always thinking about the pup. Im so happy he has a good home now.
