The History of Long Island...
I met some people from Indiana last week and the guy asked me
"So, what is so interesting about Long Island?" In a curious educational kind of way...
What historic/symbolic/unique things can be mentioned about Long Island?
Maybe you can come up with mroe than I did

The way I see it, it is one of the best locations to be in (yeah, even though I moved to NC, I still love NY).....You have NYC very close......beautiful beaches......2 hours away from the mountains......Long Island kinda has it all, you know?

Off the top of my head.....
I believe that LI was the only part of the colonies under British control during the Revolutionary war. If I remember correctly there was an extensive spy ring here sending intel to NYC which was then passed to General Washington.
Montauk Pt Lighthouse was commissioned and surveyed by George Washington. He wanted it to last for 200 years, believing that by then we'd have better technology. If there hadn't been an effort to save it, it would have fallen into the ocean around 200 years later due to beach erosion. I find that amazing.
There were quite a few stops on the Underground Railroad on LI.
Sadly, there was a strong KKK presesnce on LI.
First suburban community in the US (Levittown)
Did you know that the Parkways (Southern State, Northern State, Meadowbrook, Wantagh, etc) were make works projects during the Great Depression? And that they used elephants to move the large blocks of stone to build the overpasses?
The whole Grumman lunar module program that was here.

All I can remember is the first chapter, "Long Island is shaped like a fish."

Teddy Roosevelt's Sagamore Hill was called the Summer White House
The Great Gatsby was written in Long Island. West Egg is a fictional name for Greatneck
The LEM (which landedon the moon) was built at Grumman in Bethpage

LI was huge during the revolution - The Battle of Long Island!!!
The Vanderbilt family...Motor parkway was a one-of-a-kind racetrack for a while....

Is he joking??? No seriously, there is soooo much history on LI that the list could go on forever. Some towns are 400 years old! I love LI for the history behind it, I think it's amazing.

ITA! I took a grad class in Long Island history, but have loved it since the 4th grade when it used to be the curriculum that year!
There are so many historic sites, cemeteries, houses etc. So many books written on Long Island.
My favorite place ever, Old Westbury Gardens, has been in dozens of films!
I love LI for this reason, too

Bloody Mary lived here, duh. Just kidding, but did you know that Irving Berlin was stationed in Yaphank and wrote a few of his musicals there, and had the soldiers do performances of them? That's pretty interesting!
I would tell you about my school, it's an important part of American and Long Island History, but I don't want to give any information about my job away on here. FM me if you want to know the history of it.
The Montauk Project. Ever heard of that? That's a cool and interesting part of our history.
Plum Island?!?!?!
Our light houses and parkways are a great part of our history.

The DUCK in Flanders!!
I grew up in Sag Harbor--it is a historic town & a whaling town..a lot of the houses that are right outside of Main Street have the window in the top of the house---"The Widows Walk" where women would watch out their for their husband's whaling ships to come back in...
Check out the Whaling Museum next time u r in Sag Harbor, there is a lot to learn there...
