I would call the ASPCA/SPCa and file a complaint of neglect. If you need the info, fm me.

Exactly.

Even in desperation, his purchase will mean the breeding of 3 more mill dogs. It is incredibly hard when we become personally involved and attached to the dog, but they ADMITTED to you that they were not allowing him to roam, or stretch, and that they are keeping him in a cage that is too small for him. That should be enough.Chat Icon

I would def buy him. We bought Bailey from a pet store and he was on "clearance" They told me he was one step away from the pound. We had to buy him.

Go and save him. I love PugsChat Icon And then complain to whoever you have to. But I would get him out of there first and worry about that later. IMO.

I think in this case saving Lenny is more important than not supporting puppy mills. I don't know if there's someone to report the shop to, but I wish we could get the word out and close down these shops for good.

Re: LONG: I NEED YOUR HELP, I don't want to start a war but I need advice

i agree with jess here. what's done is done - we all know we shouldn't go into pet stores b/c we might get attached to these poor animals and risk taking them home, and therefore perpetuating the horrors the adult dogs go thru in puppy mills. but at this point, i would not be able to live with myself if i just let him stay there and possibly die.

your post was so moving, i agree with the PP who said to get your story out into the media. give the store owner your # - he has to know that at 6 mos, Lenny is a much harder sale. maybe after some media attention, he will give in and let you adopt him.

i am so sorry you are going thru this right now. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: LONG: I NEED YOUR HELP, I don't want to start a war but I need advice

Just a quick question....do you know what pound they would bring him to? Can you maybe stalk to local pounds?

Most millers do not allow shops to return dogs. Also, ask to see the invoice of what they paid for the dog. Most likely it is around $150 -$250. If you can use that as a jumping off point and try to get him to justify the $700 clearance, then if you feel you need to buy him, start there. The less profit he makes the less likely he will try to replace this dog.

Oh this makes me so sick. If I were in your shoes I would probably buy him. I won't go to pet stores for this reason.

One thing you should do though is contact the ASPCA, right letters to BBB and CC News 12, Newsday and anyone else, it couldn't hurt.

Re: LONG: I NEED YOUR HELP, I don't want to start a war but I need advice

this is very sad indeed.

BUT.... please realize when you buy him you are making another opening in their store for another dog who may sit in a cage for months on end.

hows this for some insight....
i just got a dog from a shelter about a month ago (january)
she had been sitting in a shelter since MAY thats NINE months.
ad before that she was a stray and bred for fighting dogs/fighting bait.

THAT to me is much more sad. at least this dog has heat, food, water & shelter. he will eventually get bought

eta" tell the owner to surrender him, they do that sometimes., i knw someone who did this actually. if he says no ou threaten (and do) call the news and all that stuf. they do NOT want bad press. and as mentioned earlier, contact a pug rescue org

I would say EFF what anyone thinks about buying a pet from a pet store.

THE animal is what is suffering here.

regardless of how you feel about pet shops and pet shop owners, the poor little animals that do not get purchased suffer the greatest.

to make yourself feel better, you *could* look at it as "rescuing" him from his terrible "life" at the pet shop, and his likely and far too untimely death.

take him home and give him the love he deserves.

in any event, you are still screwing the guy out of almost $2k

ETA" after thinking about it, I would still get the dog, BUT I would write an open letter to the NYTimes, the Post, Craigs List etc...documenting the treatment of the puppy.

file a complaint wth the BBB and anyone else...the Humane Society maybe.

I would rescue the dog, but wouldn't let this guy off the hook unscathed.

I agree 100% I understand the argument re: No pet shops, but this isn't exactly an impulse buy - you have an attachment to this dog and you're watching him suffer when you can give him a good life ........I wouldn't be able to stand it - I'd buy him

Go with your gut and get that poor puppy.

Yes there are going to be 100's of more "Lenny's" out there, etc.. but this is your situation and you wont be able to live with yourself if you don't follow your heart.

Get him and give him all the love in the world.

I would still try to get this place written, up etc..

to heck with what it is the "right" thing to do- give Lenny a good home and let yourself love him.

Go buy him, bring him home and give him love.

But, write a letter to every network, craigs list etc- exposing the store and how awful they are.

Don't let anyone tell you that you are doing the wrong thing-

You are giving a loving home to a dog and, at the same time, you will be giving bad publicity to a bad place- good for you! Chat Icon

I am not always sure if this always works though. I filed a complaint once with BTJ's jungle in West Islip. It was the middle of summer, no air conditioning, not even a fan blowing on their cages. A bunch of puppies shoved into 1 cage in the sweltering heat.

I called the ASPCA who directed me to the Suffolk County SPCA - the woman on the phone could care less and just took the info down. I went back a week later and still , nothing had been done. You can't even put a fan on the dogs cages!!!!! So I called the SPCA back and had to leave a message, no one ever got back to me.

So - IMO - getting the dog out of the situation is your best bet. There is nothing wrong with reaching out to the media but I am not sure if it always works.

I think the fact that people might 'condemn' you for buying a pet store pup is a ridiculous reason not to get this dog -- *if* you want him and if you can afford to keep him. The fact that you would be supporting a puppy mill, however, is NOT a ridiculous reason and it's something you need to think long and hard about...

You can flame me all you want, but I PERSONALLY wouldn't want to let this particular animal suffer just because he may have come from a puppy mill and in some way I'd be supporting that... I'd go get him... but mainly b/c I probably wouldn't be able to stop myself. :(

ETA -- This is coming from someone who has rescued ALL of her pets -- included her horses... so I'm not a big supporter of pet stores and have never gotten a pet store animal. I think I've only been inside a pet store that sold animals once in my life...

I agree 100%- both my pets are rescues- but there is no way I could leave this guy there - know I could give him a great home

Re: LONG: I NEED YOUR HELP, I don't want to start a war but I need advice

My labradoodle was in a pet store at 8mos old in a crate too smallfor her alsio,

I walked in and told them that I was taking the dog, to call the police and then I am going to call Channel 12. I felt so bad for this dog. The owner of the shop and I came up with a "solution" I paid them for the shots and the chip, I then offered to pay the invoice price not theirs, but the owner said no, she would be happy just getting back the shots and chip money.

Call Channel 12, but if you really want to help "lenny" buy him, give him the home because obviously fate is keeping him there for you and then fight it. IMO, its more inportant he gets a home then fight. After giving him the home then fight. He could "disappear" during the fight and you will never know what happened to him.

I wish you luck. FM me if you need anything.

Re: LONG: I NEED YOUR HELP, I don't want to start a war but I need advice

I think you should contact the media and the pug rescue and see if you can get them to give him to you that way.
Even if it's for a small fee (not $700).

As other posters have said, buying him will allow them to bring in ten more puppies and continue to funnel money into the mills and pet store business.

I know this is very difficult and I truly admire your control up to this point. If the worst case scenario is that the media and/or store don't cooperate with you...then you could buy him, but being aware that it still perpetuates the whole puppy mill industry.Chat Icon
