Spinoff to Deb's Mac VS PC- Questions about Mac
Okay, never used a Mac, but thinking of getting a laptop too. DH just got a new laptop (PC) and it has Vista, which we both dislike, but know one can get a PC w/o Vista.
What program does a Mac run on?
Can you use Excel/Word on a Mac?
What makes a Mac "run" better (as some posted on Deb's thread)?

MAc has it's own operating system. I believe now it's Leopard. (Mine is from 2005 so I have Tiger). It's used the same way as Windows, but it has some snazzy features and it is said to be more stable.
Of COURSE you can run Office. In fact I really like the features of MS Office on Mac better.
It's an adjustment to learn to use a mac, but the itnerface is more user-friendly and you can drag and drop most things a lot more than you can on Windows. It's just cleaner and prettier. Really it's a matter of personal preference. But I am really in LOVE with my Mac!

If you buy a PC with Dell, you can opt to have Windows XP on it instead of Vista. I'm not sure about other PC vendors (Sony, Gateway, etc)

What is your dislike to Vista? Most people just comment and say they hate it..what do you hate about it?
Mac Operating system is called Leapord
Yes, mac has MS Office
Mac "run" better because there are less people hacking away at the operating system...things that come with a Mac make it "Easier" to do you comman task. Windows XP didn't come with alot of these "easy" features but Vista does.

ITA. I mean you can get a Mac that uses a windows OS, but IMO that defeats the purpose. I have 2 Macs, and they both run Mac X. I have full MS office on both and have no issue when I send files to a PC user. I also prefer the options of the Mac better. It is more user friendly and a *cleaner* running system IMO.

The problem with Vista is that it is currently having compatibility issues. Although you can chose to run programs like Windows in an older version, there are still some bugs. Also, the internet part of Vista is causing some issues as well.

Our biggest issue is MANY programs are not compatible with Vista. DH has had to DL Vista compatible versions for some. Others he cannot use on the laptop and uses our desktop.
