TY everyone!
As much as I would love a MAC...and learn from it.....Its not in the budget.
DH happened to be purchasing the laptop for me (total sweetie) so I am going with a PC.
oh, how nice of him!
just make life easy on yourself.... buy symantic anti-virus and zone-alarm.... the 2 best investments a person can make... then surf away!

You can run as much antivirus as you want...Windows is still unstable and will still crash..there is no "blue screen of death" on a Mac.

You're right - there is no blue screen of death because the Mac won't even give you the error code that caused the crash. The mac just crashes to where you need to force quit everything, or hit the power button. At least the BSOD gives me drivers/error codes, etc where I can diagnose the problem.

I've had my mac since '05 i can count the number of times it's crashed on one hand.

Same for my PC, I've never gotten a BSOD.
As people in the thread have said before, it comes down to people taking care of their machines.
If there was as many available programs for mac as there are for windows, then the mac would crash as much as a windows machine supposedly crashes.
Right now there are few mac viruses because there are few mac users. As that number increases, so will the viruses. Virus writers arent going to write viruses for a small number of users, they are going to go for more bang for their buck.

This is true, but I am enjoying it so far
It's really a matter of preference in the end.
ETA: My FH is a BIG computer person..it's his degree and his job after all, and although he'd always probably need a PC for work, he's definitely into my Mac and would like a Mac as the family computer

Agreed. It comes down to preference and what the machine is going to be used for. Both Mac and PC have their benefits.
Not directed at you specifically Jennifer, just in general....
I just can't stomach how some mac users push mac blindly on other users - in my eyes, if you want to use a microsoft product as your primary function (office, etc) - there is no reason to spend extra money on a Mac, to buy ported software or VM software to run a virtual machine that would not work as well as if was running on a PC. I'm a PC user primarily - but I do use a mac occasionally. I make the decision on what type of machine I am going to use or purchase or what type of machine I'm going to recommend to someone based on their activities, and that is it. As a PC user and advocate, I have no problem recommending a Mac to someone.. I don't know why some Mac users can't do the same, understanding that just in some situations, a PC might be a better solution for someone.

I personally tell people about Macs because I really LOVE my Mac. I know it's not for everyone. Which is why you'll notice I always tout the graphics and media capabilities. I may be passionate about Mac (for a long time I was a PC advocate and wouldn't touch macs with a 10 foot pole), but when people are making decisions about computers, I assume they are intelligent enough to make their own decisions about costs and benefits and what they're using the computer for.
I think a Mac is a great computer for general home use..especially now that many people use computers for photo editing, working with music and video, etc. I think the Mac is better for this type of user. I think it's equal to PCs in other basic functions like Office Suite and web-surfing, but may be problmatic with proprietary business software.
I think what PC users don't understand about Mac users is that we REALLY love Macs. Something about them makes us feel passionate about it. When people ask me if they should get a Gateway, Dell or HP, I can give them a more straightfoirward kind of opinion of the plusses and minuses.. but when I'm talking about a Mac, sure I think it IS better for me and for many users, but it's also just a LOVE thing. To me a Mac is what I always thought computers should be. On TV (where computers always outpaced real life computers) I'd see people drag and drop things..I was always puzzled about why this was not possible on a PC. I LOVE that capability on a Mac. Everything is more intuitive to me, which is why I love it. I think there's a difference between being PASSIONATE about something, and PUSHING it on someone..and these are all people who ASKED.
I'm the same way about VW. I've had countless problems with my VW, but there's just so much I LOVE about it, that Fh boughtb a VW and I'm 90% sure my next car will be a VW.

Re: Laptops - PC or Apple?
good analogy JenniferEver! cars and computers
It really IS like that. I'm sooooo loyal to my sony vaio, you'd think I'm married to my laptop
I'm also quite enamoured with my prius. That car ROCKS. It is so quiet, comfy, efficient, pretty, and I can stuff tons of stuff in it (becuase of the folddown backseats). Is it for everyone? hardly. Some people need more space, some just want a frilly sports car.
I will make a ciouple more stipulations about PC's vs Macs. Macs all come from one vendor.... with general configurations that are convenient for the bulk of consumers... So, the range of product options is more limited, and the product quality is more consistent. PC's, well, there are DEFINITE ranges in capability and hardware quality. On the low end... most of the moderate priced manufacturers (dell, gateway amoungst others) really pass off some half-@ssed stuff to their customers. Sony is better.... Lenovo is BEST, but quite pricey.
I have been transformed by DH. If buying a desktop, I would never buy a pre-fab thing.... especially if it was pre-configured and sold in a store. I would build the baby myself with newegg parts. the quality of the parts is soooo much better than dell/gateway/HP. In addition, if a part is now too slow 2 years down the road, unclip it and replace it with something better!
DH's PC's power could melt any Mac......... but do most people need that? Heck no! But it sure is nice to have a super speedy computer with an out of this world graphics card if you DO need it...... Lord knows he needs it becuase he's a gamer who likes those super realistic war/strategy games

Re: Laptops - PC or Apple?
My FH builds his own computers...and he's offered to build them for me..but at least with a company I have someone to call to fix it...not my FH the famous procrastinator.

Re: Laptops - PC or Apple?
I hear ya on that one....
but with my DH, computers take precedence he'd be on that repair ASAP....
As for changing the ceiling lightbulbs.... well, THAT could take a few months I'm preggers and had some minor complications, I refuse to climb a ladder and change that bad boy!
meanwhile, our dining room is very very dark

I'm sure he'd fix HIS computer. For XMas be bought me a flat panel monitor...but it doesn't work on either computer it's hooked up to. Has he fixed it? NOPE

Re: Laptops - PC or Apple?
the solution:
if he doesn't fix it, just push him aside and sit down at HIS computer
OMG, if I even shift that keyboard one inch he feels violated
THAT motivates them
