Chipping in on gifts

What are your thoughts on this? I talking about bridal and baby showers, not birthdays, holidays, etc.

I personally am not of fan of chipping in with someone. I fell like the guest could get so much more if people went out on there own.

AT my bridal and baby showers the same people, dh's side, chipped in on gifts for me. And while I got great stuff, I feel like its lazy to just offer $$ and have one person get the gifts.

Thoughts?

I don't necessarily see something wrong with it. Just wondering what others did.

Re: Chipping in on gifts

I chip in on gifts with others to make a larger purchase, like a stroller..etc.

Normally I purchase a solo gift, but sometimes chipping in allows for a bigger item

Re: Chipping in on gifts

I don't like to chip in because I feel like it takes away from what I personally got, since it was purchased from a bunch of people. But I do see the use for it, because it allows them to purchase the big-ticket items that maybe one person would never buy alone.

This is what I do.

My family did this for my bridal shower so that I could have all 12 place settings of my china.

Re: Chipping in on gifts

I recently did this for a friend's (who's also a LIFer) baby shower that I recently went to. I looked at her registry and of course wanted to get a nice gift, I was chatting with another friend of ours who was also going to the shower and we decided to chip in together. It's not laziness, but we were able to get her a good gift whereas separately we would've only been able to get "so-so" gifts.

For me the rule is, if a gift is going to come from 2 or more people then it should look like it.

Me either. I'm going to spend the same whether I chip in for a more expensive item or purchase a different gift myself.

I can go either way. I am happy to get my own gift. I am happy chip in and get a larger gift. I don't feel like I need to give a gift that someone can point to and say it's from Christine opposed to the gift being from my friends from work or what have you.

Its usually more trouble than it's worth with certain friends of mine.

As a receipient, I wouldn't feel slighted at all, though.

Re: Chipping in on gifts

I often chip in with people! I love it because I am a working mom of 2 small kids and it saves me a lot of time and energy that I don't really have. Also, in most cases combining 2 budgets enables us to get the giftee something really nice that we wouldn't have been able to afford otherwise if each gifter went on their own.

So, I think in most cases it is a very good idea!Chat Icon

I chip in for the biggie with friends, then get something small, yet equally useful/nice on my own.

ITA, especially since for showers most people buy a gift from the registry anyway, what's the difference if I buy it online on my lunchbreak without putting any thought into it or hand $$ to someone else to do it?

I'd like to go out and find something thoughtful for ever person I need to buy a gift for, but sometimes it makes more sense to chip in - my sister and I usually chip in on shower gifts, for example, because we are able to buy a bigger ticket item that way. I don't see anything wrong with it. At my bridal shower I had lots of "chip in" gifts and I loved them and appreciated people buying me such $$ gifts, even if they had to work together to buy them.

I will chip in to buy a complete theme.
Like all the bedding, or all the towels or something.

I agree with this. For family events, I usually chip in with my mom and sister and get something big.

Re: Chipping in on gifts

I do not see the issue, I like to chip in so we can get the person a larger type gift

IMHO, any gift should be appreciated

Re: Chipping in on gifts

my family is just different when it comes to gifts, i think.

for example, for my baby shower i got all the big ticket items. and each one was from one person. my sister bought me teh pack and play, my mom the infant stroller, etc.

it's just not something we did.

Re: Chipping in on gifts

I see nothing wrong with it, if it results in them combingin funds to buy a bigger gift they otherwise wouldn't have. I do think it's bad to give a group gift and everyone chipped in less than they would have on their own.

I don't mind chipping in on gifts if it means the recipient can get something bigger and better than what I can purchase on my own
