Handles up so my hands don't get filthy putting the utensils in, and so I don't contaminate the utensils when I take them out. Even if I wash my hands, if you are a guest at my house, do you want to watch me grab a fork by the tines from the dishwasher, then give it to you to use?.....

I do handles down except knives...DH puts them in all different ways and sometimes they don't come clean with the handles up.

Ditto this. I also put the knives facing up - but that's just how my mom did it.
