Updated: P.U.P. - anyone have this annoying rash??

Assuming that this is what I have. I am waiting for a call back from my doctor but the midwife who runs our Childbirth Preperatin class told me she thinks this is what it is (I showed her my belly after class on Monday Chat Icon ) It's called PUP or "puerperal urticaria of pregnancy."

According to the internet:

"This is a condition that results in hives or rashes that erupt all over the body. The condition is usually quite annoying and very itchy! Most women find their symptoms improve shortly after delivery. PUP typically does not appear until roughly the third trimester of pregnancy. While this condition is not harmful, it can by very trying for itchy and expectant moms."

I am seriously about to scratch MY SKIN OFF MY BELLY!! I hope the doctor calls me back and tells me what I can do to calm this stupid rash thing. I am worried I will draw blood next time I scratch... I just can't TAKE it!!!! Chat Icon

UPDATE 1/9 - Doctors office called me. They want me to go in tomorrow morning for blood work - to make sure it has nothing to do with my liver Chat Icon

Re: P.U.P. - anyone have this annoying rash??

I had that it is PUPPP and it was awful! I know a few other women that post on parenting had this as well. One thing that worked well for me was taking an Aveeno Oatmeal Bath it provided some relief. Also I was referred to a dermatologist and wound up getting a prescription cream that was safe to use. I didn't notice how far along you were but most of the time it doesn't go away until you give birth. Mine actually subsided, came back and went away by about 38 weeks. Unfortunately it came back after I delivered as well. If you search there are a lot of posts on this subject.

Oh gosh. Thanks for letting me know! This thing is just AWFUL!! I will be 29 weeks tomorrow and it literally just appeared one day when I woke up last week. Ugh. It just itches SO BAD!!!!! I will try the oatmeal bath - see if that calms the itching a bit. THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLY!!!!

I actually have been itching so bad that I make myself raw and bleed but no real rash. Just irritation. My arm, legs, shoulders and back are the worst. My Dr. just sent me for a Liver bile test. There is some rare condition in pregnancy where your bile pools in your liver and somehow makes you extremely itchy. Waiting for the results and totally feeling your pain.

Oh wow I am so sorry! I know what you are going through. I just want to tear my skin off. Luckily these bumpy things are just confined to my belly... for now. I hope I can go see the doctor sometime soon so I can find out what's going on. A big Chat Icon to you!!!!

I have it. it was bad the first two or three weeks but now it only bothers me sporadically.... it was mostly on my belly but it did spread to my upper thighs. my doctor told me that i could use some over the counter creams but it never got that bad for me....

Re: Updated: P.U.P. - anyone have this annoying rash??

I had it starting at 27 weeks I believe ... do yourself a favor and see a derotologist and get Prednisone (a steriod) ... I waited a long time before getting the proper help. I had it from head to tow from and back, I slept in the bath tub and had a breakdown at work over it.

Go to drugstore.com and buy GRANDPA'S PINE TAR SOAP (it stinks, but suck it up, believe me, you will ahve relief) --- lather and let it sit for 2 minutes, then rinse with cool water.

Also buy Jason's Organic Witch Vera Gel

Combined, this method was a godsend!

In addition, aveeno BABY wash and lotion helped a lot too.

Thank you so much for all the advice! I go to the doctor tomorrow morning so we'll see what he says too!
